Where is…the hanging letter M from the Mary Tyler Moore Show?

I haven’t done one of these posts in a long time. I have the others linked at the bottom, like the Mustang from Bullitt, the Partridge Family Bus, the Time Machine from The Time Machine 1960 movie, etc. I love finding out what happened to different props.

I love movie and TV show props, especially the shows I grew up with. If I had the money, I would have a warehouse full of props. This is one of the first props I remember seeing. I grew up on Mary Tyler Moore. She was part of the CBS Saturday night lineup that was considered one of the best nights for television in history.

I loved Mary’s first apartment, where she lived downstairs from Rhoda Morgenstern. I always noticed a letter M hanging on the wall. Later in the show, when Mary moved to another apartment, she was shown hanging it up in her new place. It was one of the most recognizable props on television.

Mary Tyler Moore took the prop home and had it for years. She said she accidentally broke it years ago, but she repaired it and still had it when she passed in 2017.  It was just sold this year, as were a lot of her personal items. It was sold to a private owner for $35,200.

    1. The reason I haven’t done that is because it’s not much of a story…it’s in the Smithsonian with Barney Millers jail door and the in or out board. .

      1. ahh, question answered! I wonder if one of the cast got the yellow picture frame from Friends that was always on the apartment door? Good idea for a series actually, there are a lot of those iconic types of things from TV shows and where do they go after the show ends…

      2. I don’t know why I like that so much. I was watching Andy Griffith last night and wondered…where is Barney’s gun now? Star Trek…I watched that last night as well and saw some props…hmmmm where is that now?
        I guess I’m odd…and that is alright!

  2. I remember in one episode there’s a fire or something where Mary has to leave quickly and she’s kind of wondering what to grab, and she grabs the M on the way out the door.

      1. Makes today’s programs look like crap, or worse. Can you imagine Mork and Mindy’s First Marriage? How about the Rosanne show without Rosanne? I can happily say I’ve never watched a main stream channel sitcom in the last fifteen, maybe 20 years, and am better off for it. I was more of an All In The Family, Bob Newhart and Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour guy.

      2. There are so few sitcoms today….the only one I’ve watched is Everyone Loves Raymond…for me that was the end of the classic sitcom….but yes…I prefer the 70s….I think that was the golden age of sitcoms.

  3. Nice list of links, Max. I wonder where props from Dr. Who are (Tardis, K9, Daleks.) I know that at least Archie Bunker’s chair is in The Smithsonian, and I hope Edith’s is also. What about Opie’s fishing pole?
