I love watching old Slade videos on youtube. They were a lot of fun to listen to and watch. They were a hard rocking glam band that somehow never made it in America. Some of their songs did a decade later covered by Quiet Riot. Slade did have a couple of hits in the 80s in America but their golden period was in the early to mid seventies.
They weren’t the only UK band not to hit big in America. They are joined by T. Rex, The Small Faces, Oasis, and The Jam just to name a few.
This song peaked at #1 in the UK and #97 in the Billboard 100 in 1972. The song was written by band members Noddy Holder and Jim Lea.
Jim Lea said he had been working on the song for a few years… he stole a phrase or two from The Beatles Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey and nobody ever noticed.
Their next single Mama Weer All Crazee Now peaked at #1 in the UK.

A rocking Slade, though I still love the darker-sounding Slade just before this hit, Look Wot You Dun and Coz I Luv You. I never stopped liking Slade at any stage of their career though, I was still charting their singles into the 90’s and their final release before breaking up, and Noddy retiring from singing.

I didn’t like Slade much when I first heard them. They’ve kind of grown on me, only because they came from that part of my life.

They were a lot of fun…that was what drew me into them…watching them in their odd clothes singing catchy songs.

you’re right, they look like they were having fun. Not a bad tune. You could add Roxy music (and Bryan Ferry solo), blur, and Stone Roses to the list of acts that were huge there but didn’t make much of an impression here . Makes it surprising in fact that the Beatles and Stones did !

With Beatles and some of the British invasion…like Herman’s Hermits…I think it was timing…how much more British can you get than the Hermits?
If you didn’t hear the Beatles and Stones talk…you really wouldn’t know they were British… because they both admired American artists and took on that singing style.
JFK ….had America eager for something new and the Beatles filled that hole a little.

I was lucky to find some of these bands. Having fun is infectious. Yeah they were good. I remember the covers of their songs. I prefer the originals but good they made some dough.
I remember seeing a video of Roxy Music with costumes on. What I remember best was I think it was Andy Mackay got last pick and got a nasty outfit’

One of my Canadian blogger friends have got me into them. I never knew much about Roxy Music but I do like their mid seventies output a lot. The bass to a lot of their songs sounds better than their peers at the time… lol luck of the draw on the outfit.

I think I might have heard the Quiet Riot cover of “Cum On Feel the Noize” before I listened to the original. That’s definitely one of my favorite Slade tunes I know.
Admittedly, I also liked “My Oh My” when it came out. While it’s nice it gave Slade a hit after a dry period of nearly 10 years, when I think about the song now, I’m more like, ‘oh my!’

I’ve never heard this one, but that’s pretty good. Pretty much what I would expect from Slade… a band that I don’t know awfy much about, but as CB says, they always sound and look like they are having a helluvatime.

I enjoy Slade. They’re crazy. I love the dude in the Ace Frehley boots with the uni-brow. Noddy’s hat reminds me of Brian Johnson.
