Buddy

I thought I’d take a break from music and movies and head on over to the dog aisle today. The wacky adventures of the author.

Our dog Martha brought home a Great Pyrenees boyfriend not long ago. We got Martha in 2019, right before COVID. We were going to get her spayed, but when COVID came, we thought we would wait. Well, we ended up not doing it. She is an inside dog, but of course goes out in our fenced-in back yard to get out and do her business.

One day, she found out she could jump the fence, and she did. Our neighborhood doesn’t have many dogs, and the ones we do have are small. Everyone in the neighborhood knows Martha and is cool with her when she does get out of our yard, which is seldom, but apparently, she found this dog somewhere, and no one is claiming him around here. We started calling him “Buddy,” and it stuck. He was on our front porch when he heard a gunshot from far off. He took off and went next door, where a teacher lives; she and her kids were petting him when we went over, and they were calling him Buddy, so it works.

We are looking at Facebook lost and found pets in our area, and posted his picture up there. He is very shy and would not come into our house whatsoever. The next day, after we found him, I lifted up the front of his body, and Bailey lifted up the other half and put him in the car. We took him to get scanned for a chip. He doesn’t have one, of course. No collar or anything. We finally got him into our house to look him over by both of us lifting him up.

I also talked to a lady who has owned this type of dog most of her life. She said he could have come from a farmer who had this dog to guard cattle, and they usually would not let them in their house. So, what we might do is buy a dog GPS tracker and a collar to see where he goes when he is outside. Of course, he could have been abandoned…a lot of options.

I have received some responses on Facebook, but no one knows him or claims him. This dog has won over our neighborhood, with at least 3 neighbors telling us that they are willing to chip in on dog food or whatever it needs to keep him here. So, for right now, we have another dog for the moment. He has the patience of Job…Martha will bark at him if he is lying down on the floor…she wants him up. He looks at me like, ” Why is she doing that?“

So for right now…we have around 280 lbs of dogs following us around.

    1. Dana…I’ve never been around a dog that acts like he doesn’t want to be rude. The most calm dog I’ve ever seen…my Saint Bernard is driving him crazy…she is just coming out of her…uh…”time”…

    1. I have to say…it’s the most calmest dog I’ve ever seen….very laid back…we haven’t heard it bark yet. Dave…the vet said that scanned him…he is probably around 1-2 years old…so he is really young.

      1. One of our sons and his family have a St Bernard who is huge; it’s like sharing a house with a small cow! Another son adopted a puppy in January whose mother is half German shepherd and half Golden Retriever. The adoption facility isn’t sure about the father but, judging by the looks of the pup, they think he is a Pyrenees Mountain dog. They’re gorgeous animals but very big.

      2. We have had 3 Saints…once they are grown…they are pretty much couch potatos…they will pick the busiest part of the house and lay right there so everyone has to walk over them.
        Yes…Buddy is the size of our Saint…and she is 6 years old…he is between 1-2 according to the vet.

  9. So great you have taken an interest in this seemingly abandoned creature. Who knows what happened, owner may have died. Or cruel as it seems if it was a working dog and no longer ableto ‘work’ is it possible the owner just stopped feeding it, forcing it to wander? I once found a racing pigeon and took it in, poor thing was near death with exhaustion. Anyway I tracked down the owner via the band number and never heard back from them. Someone told me once they go off course like that they are of no use anymore. I would open the garage door every day until the bird decided to fly off.

    1. Oh that makes me so *&^%^& angry! The phrase “no use anymore” … well the vet said he is only 1-2 years old…he is very young…just big. Or he could have been left after someone moved…
      He is the sweetest dog I’ve ever encountered…so I don’t want to take him away from anyone but apparently they are not giving him a home…but we will continue looking for a while.

  12. You’re braver than me, trying to pick up a big dog you don’t know and put him in a vehicle. I’m glad Buddy is friendly. Is it possible he is neutered? He may have the urge but not be able to act on it?

    1. Good question….he has so much hair…they have 3 levels of hair…we can’t tell yet. I’ll pick him up but I haven’t tried to get a closer look…but I am believing it…he acts more confused if anything with Martha is around him.
