I was talking to my friend Ron, and he mentioned a country duo in the 80s called Foster and Lloyd. This aligns with Dwight Yoakam and the new sound that was coming at the time. The Nashville establishment didn’t like this because it wasn’t pop with a country accent…it had its roots in older country music. Nashville loves to eat its own at times, but that has changed some through the years.
Radney is from Del Rio, Texas, and started to play guitar and write songs at 12. Later on, he moved to Nashville to start a career in music after college. He became the staff songwriter at MTM Publishing Company in 1985, where he met Bill Lloyd.
The duo formed Foster & Lloyd and signed with RCA Records Nashville in 1986. They had 4 top ten hits on the Billboard Country Charts and were also successful on the Canadian Country Charts. Their first song Crazy Over You peaked at #4, and their second single, Sure Thing, peaked at #8 on the Billboard Country Charts and Canadian Country Charts in 1987.
This song was after they broke up, and Radney released it in 1992, and it was very successful. It peaked at #10 on the Billboard Country Charts in 1992 and also at #54 on the Canadian Country Charts. It was on his album Del Rio, TX 1959.
Foster & Lloyd did reunite in 2011 and released an album called It’s Already Tomorrow.
Just Call Me Lonesome
Just call me lonesomeHeartbroke and then some‘Cause I ain’t got no oneSince you’ve been goneYou called me babyNow I’ve got a new nameDon’t need my old oneCall me lonesome from now on
You used to call me, your one and onlyBut now you only call me someone you once knewYou were my angel, before some strangerStole your heart and stole my world when he stole you
Just call me lonesomeHeartbroke and then some‘Cause I ain’t got no oneSince you’ve been goneYou called me babyNow I’ve got a new nameDon’t need my old oneCall me lonesome from now on
I see you with him, and fall apart againRemembering when I was the only man you neededWe said forever, We’d be togetherHe came between us and now forever lies in pieces
Don’t need my old oneCall me lonesome from now on

Dude! I absolutely loved this song!!! I used to sing it at karaoke, if you can believe that. He is a fantastic songwriter, too.

Thank you Keith! I wasn’t sure how many people would remember it.

Definitely sounds more Bakersfield than Nashville. Almost makes up for the 35º and rain this morning.

Yes it does…we are lucky here…it’s 70 and a little cloudy but no rain yet.

That’s a great sound and right up my alley. While I don’t recall the music at the time, I did run across the names last year. They co-wrote a song with Guy Clark called Picasso’s Mandolin. I was considering using it in a post but didn’t .

I thought you would like this Randy. This is the kind of country I like…no pop / country.

Absolutely right up alley Max.

Dwight Yoakam was the one who got me to love Country Music! Well, I always loved George Jones, but I backslid for many years. Ha!

LOL…I was in a band called The Backsliders lol. We got it from a Waltons episode. I like this kind of country.

Very country and probably a great song to get people out on the floor to dance.

I have the 1st by Foster and Lloyd and like it a lot. Just never kept up with them. I could give this a spin quite easily. Good one Max.

More people knew those guys than what I thought. Like someone said…I hear Bakersfield.

I really like the clean sound and playing. No idea how popular this is or was but I can guess it would get lost like a lot of good music does

It has got lost in time.

never heard of the guy but I rather like this song. It did put me a tiny bit in mind of Dwight Y. You should be the one living in Texas I think!

When I heard him…I thought of Yoakam… that Bakersfield sound is pretty cool. I like it much better than “bro country” and pop with a country accent.

I like Dwight and if this guy isn’t far off, he might be a guy I’d like to hear more of

Yes…him and Lloyd basically combined power pop and country

To me it sounds olde timey but timeless; but I sure ain’t no expert on the Country thang.

I thought Dwight Yoakam when I heard it…it does sound old.
Nashville and Country music. When Clint Black had a few hits…Merle Haggard opened up for him… nothing against Black…but this didn’t make sense in my rock mind.
Can you imagine The Stones opening up for The Foo Fighters? It just didn’t make sense to me but Nashville loves to pitch the old ones away.

From a lot of what I’ve read there is a Country clique. When you’re in you’re in, until suddenly you’re on the outer. But again, I’m literally a long ways from what goes and went on, you’re in the right geographical place to see it all first hand.

Good stuff, Max, Radney Foster is a new name to me. I like all three tracks you called out here. It’s a neat blend of country and rock. “Sure Thing” by Foster and Lloyd adds a dose of jangle pop to it – very nice!

They were just as much power pop than country…Lloyd went on to do just power pop I believe…they were successful though.

I had never heard of him until I was reading an interview with Darius Rucker and he mentioned how much he admired him, so I checked out something on YouTube. Never heard of the earlier duo. Sounds good. His look reminds me of Marshall Crenshaw. Waltons episode? What were you playing, Thrash Metal?

I just learned about him myself…it does sound like Crenshaw! With a country accent in the music.
LOL no thrash metal! Yes it was an episode which John…the dad never went to church and called himself a backslider. That stuck…we had business cards…it was a rock band only.

I’m sure I’ve seen the episode, I’ve seen most of them. I went on a kick a few years ago, and got all the DVDs out of my local library. Cool name for a band.

Oh we went through them around 2 years ago…every episode…it’s a timeless show because of the time period it was in.
