Radney Foster – Just Call Me Lonesome

I was talking to my friend Ron, and he mentioned a country duo in the 80s called Foster and Lloyd. This aligns with Dwight Yoakam and the new sound that was coming at the time. The Nashville establishment didn’t like this because it wasn’t pop with a country accent…it had its roots in older country music. Nashville loves to eat its own at times, but that has changed some through the years. 

Radney is from Del Rio, Texas, and started to play guitar and write songs at 12. Later on, he moved to Nashville to start a career in music after college. He became the staff songwriter at MTM Publishing Company in 1985, where he met Bill Lloyd.

The duo formed Foster & Lloyd and signed with RCA Records Nashville in 1986. They had 4 top ten hits on the Billboard Country Charts and were also successful on the Canadian Country Charts. Their first song Crazy Over You peaked at #4, and their second single, Sure Thing, peaked at #8 on the Billboard Country Charts and Canadian Country Charts in 1987. 

​This song was after they broke up, and Radney released it in 1992, and it was very successful. It peaked at #10 on the Billboard Country Charts in 1992 and also at #54 on the Canadian Country Charts. It was on his album Del Rio, TX 1959. 

Foster & Lloyd did reunite in 2011 and released an album called It’s Already Tomorrow.

  3. That’s a great sound and right up my alley. While I don’t recall the music at the time, I did run across the names last year. They co-wrote a song with Guy Clark called Picasso’s Mandolin. I was considering using it in a post but didn’t .

    1. When I heard him…I thought of Yoakam… that Bakersfield sound is pretty cool. I like it much better than “bro country” and pop with a country accent.

    1. I thought Dwight Yoakam when I heard it…it does sound old.
      Nashville and Country music. When Clint Black had a few hits…Merle Haggard opened up for him… nothing against Black…but this didn’t make sense in my rock mind.
      Can you imagine The Stones opening up for The Foo Fighters? It just didn’t make sense to me but Nashville loves to pitch the old ones away.

      1. From a lot of what I’ve read there is a Country clique. When you’re in you’re in, until suddenly you’re on the outer. But again, I’m literally a long ways from what goes and went on, you’re in the right geographical place to see it all first hand.

  11. I had never heard of him until I was reading an interview with Darius Rucker and he mentioned how much he admired him, so I checked out something on YouTube. Never heard of the earlier duo. Sounds good. His look reminds me of Marshall Crenshaw. Waltons episode? What were you playing, Thrash Metal?

    1. I just learned about him myself…it does sound like Crenshaw! With a country accent in the music.
      LOL no thrash metal! Yes it was an episode which John…the dad never went to church and called himself a backslider. That stuck…we had business cards…it was a rock band only.

      1. I’m sure I’ve seen the episode, I’ve seen most of them. I went on a kick a few years ago, and got all the DVDs out of my local library. Cool name for a band.

    1. No no…everyone is entitled to their opinion. Whatever happened…happened in Feb. That was the last time I liked your posts. Also I have cut down posting to mostly Fri-Sun….I just stopped the everyday stuff.
