Faces – Stay With Me

For the longest time, this is the only song I knew by The Faces. I found out how good they were not just by this one but by their other songs. This is the Rod Stewart I think of when I think of him. Absolutely killer on stage at this time with this band powering it on.

I usually don’t like gimmicky instruments, like in the 1980,s they had guitars with what looked like hockey sticks. I have one of those, and the strings break like crazy. Or the guitars with no headstocks…I hated those. One guitar I did like in the late sixties, early seventies was the one that Ron Wood is playing in the live video clip. The “See-Through” Ampeg Dan Amstrong Guitar. Keith Richards played one as well, and they sound dirty and raunchy. They are now worth 2-6 grand. All of you non-guitar fans…sorry. The one below can be had for $5500.

This song was written by Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart, which became the Faces’ biggest hit. Stay With Me peaked at #17 in the Billboard 100, #6 in the UK, and #4 in Canada in 1972. I’ve always liked the dirty, filthy sound of the song. It’s not my so called favorite song by them. That would be Ooh La La by the Faces in 1973.

This band was formed from the Small Faces when Steve Marriott quit and Ron Wood and Rod Stewart took his place. Steve was both a great guitarist and even better singer. I remember seeing a clip of the 1993 Brit Awards on some TV show and saw a reunion of the Faces with Bill Wyman of the Stones filling in for Ronnie Lane.

Stay With Me

In the morning
Don’t say you love me
‘Cause I’ll only kick you out of the door

I know your name is Rita
‘Cause your perfume smelling sweeter
Since when I saw you down on the floor
guitar

Won’t need to much persuading
I don’t mean to sound degrading
But with a face like that
You got nothing to laugh about

Red lips hair and fingernails
I hear your a mean old Jezebel
Lets go up stairs and read my tarot cards

Stay with me
Stay with me
For tonight you better stay with me

Stay with me
Stay with me
For tonight you better stay with me

So in the morning
Please don’t say you love me
‘Cause you know I’ll only kick you out the door

Yea I’ll pay your cab fare home
You can even use my best cologne
Just don’t be here in the morning when I wake up

Stay with me
Stay with me
‘Cause tonight you better stay with me
Sit down, get up, get down

Stay with me
Stay with me
Cause tonight your going stay with me
Hey, whats your name again
Oh no, get down

      1. Oh…okay, well I was an 8 year old then with a Dad in show business sharing a bedroom with my 5 year old brother (bunk beds) with a radio w/FM & a television. Rod made an impression on the little me then. Great memories.

  1. Likewise the only Faces song I knew until recently, though with an asterisk- I think when I was a little kid & it was a hit, the radio station referred to it as by ‘Rod Stewart’. Either way, good rocker, in fact my favorite rock song involving Rod the Mod.

    1. This was around 4 months after Maggie Mae…so his name probably started to come first….Every Picture was there also I think…so he was coming up.

  2. One of the most badass effin songs of all time, seriously. It’s got it all. A KILLER guitar intro (I dare you to find a better one.) The lyrics can be sung by a man or a woman. (Shades of Bowie’s Suffragette City’s Wham Bam Thank You Ma’am.) The piano adds so much to it. In the first video Rod really messes up the lyrics. Isn’t that Steve Marriott in there playing and singing backup?? Did he stay on after Rod and Ron joined the group? Love the drumming in this also.

    1. No…Steve Marriott was in Humble Pie…he is in my top 3 of favorite singers…what a voice that dude had. That is Ronnie Wood on guitar and Ronnie Lane on bass…
      I agree! What a INTRO!

  3. I 100% agree with you Max, “Stay With Me” is a great rocker. This was Rod Stewart at his peak as a vocalist. His raspy vocals are perfect for that kind of “dirty” rock.

I have a vinyl copy of “Ooh La La,” which I got used in 2018. It’s got a fun cover that has a little mechanism allowing you to move the eyes and the jaw of the dude on the front side – slightly creepy but fun! 🙂

    1. Yes I love this song and his period Christian…I don’t think he topped this early period in songs…although thats not saying I don’t like plenty from later on.
Ooh La La….is such a great song…it’s one that I would have given almost anything to write. Oh yes! I remember that cover!

  4. I can still remember hearing stay with me for the first time on late night radio, and all I really knew about Stewart at the time was Maggie May, and Every Picture Tells and Story, I really don’t think I knew much about the Faces until a long time later (a wink is as good as a nod to a dead horse) …then I remember a reunuin of sorts that I read about in Rolling Stone as a benefit for Ronnie Lane….for me they were a lot like the Babys…I knew and loved their music but didn’t know much about them…

    1. I didn’t know much about them until a few years ago. I started to like the Small Faces and then found out they lost Steve Marriott and then gained Stewart and Wood. At first I only liked the Small Faces…but then I started to get into more than just this song…but over all I did like the Small Faces better…because of Marriott.
Yea I remember that benefit for Lane. I love that album by the Faces…”A nod…”

    1. Yes it is…I like his first albums and The Faces through that period. Lane wrote some good songs as well through this period.
