Director Sam Mendes – 4 Movies on The Beatles

Sam Mendes has directed some huge films like 1917, American Beauty, Road To Perdition, and Skyfall to name just a few.

This looks interesting and new…and potentially groundbreaking. In recent years Queen and Elton John got a biopic treatment but I never thought someone would try The Beatles because it was a lot to put into one movie. Well this will be four different movies that will intersect through the perspective of each Beatle.

From this article:

Each film will be told from the point of view of a different band member, and will eventually “intersect to tell the astonishing story of the greatest band in history.” Sony will distribute the films worldwide in 2027 and with this intriguing promise: “The dating cadence of the films, the details of which will be shared closer to release, will be innovative and groundbreaking.”

  1. Damn! That is a good idea, I’m surprised now that I think of it no one’s already done so. Doing 4 separate ones is likely very good as they each had things going on outside the band which wouldn’t get looked at in one catch-all film. It’s a drag we have to wait three years!

    1. Yea…I guess they will all intersect at some point…it’s pretty damn amazing. At least they will cover their career and not have to skip things because of time. It should be really interesting.

      1. It’s cool that all 4 have cleared the music rights for it…I would imagine it would go in the order of when they joined….the old John, Paul, George, and Ringo…I’m very interested on how he will intersect them.

      1. That was a fun one…I liked it and the Lennon scene. The one I was disappointed in was Birth of the Beatles…and I was just 12. The cast was good but it was so bad.

      2. No I never saw those. There was another about John and Paul called Two of Us…I never saw that one either. You see that one?

  2. No kidding, Max, I had no idea – sounds like a pretty massive undertaking.

Biopics can be challenging to make. My wife wants to see the new one on Bob Marley because like me she digs the music. I checked out some reviews over the weekend. They consistently criticized the film draws a very one-sided, glorifying picture of Marley.

    1. Yea…I like documentaries better. I like Anthology but I don’t trust all of it. They are doing it…you know what I mean? They won’t tell you some stuff.
I don’t know what to think about this though….at least we will have 4 different opinions.

  3. I’m not sure how I feel about this… One movie might not have been enough, but four sounds like overkill. It might get repetitive, given that they all had fairly similar backgrounds, from a fairly similar part of the world. Plus we already know so much of the story… Maybe a limited TV series might have been better…? I look forward to being proven wrong, if Mendes does something innovative with it.

    1. I think it will be innovative…not just 4 separate movies…although I wouldn’t mind…as long as they get it right…thats my main thing. Queen didn’t…for those who knew the story….too many know The Beatles story to get something completely wrong.

      1. I think that is what they are talking about…together in sync…you could get by with that with Queen…at least until people caught up…but with The Beatles it won’t pass. Too many know.

      2. Yea….heck I just want things to be in order at least. That is why I dont trust The Anthology much…if Lennon were alive…he would have injected more of the dirt lol.

  4. Woo Hoo! 2027 seems like a long way off but time flies like an arrow. I love the concept of this with 4 movies, each told from one band member’s perspective and then they merge into one story. Heck Yes!

  5. I gather Sam Mendes is a Beatles fan. Haha. I like a lot of what he has done so far. This sounds like a fantastic project, but as you alluded to – I can’t fathom how challenging this would be to do it right whereby mega Beatles fans such as yourself would give it the tick of approval.

    1. Thats the deal…unlike Queen’s biopic…they got things wrong…you won’t be able to pass that by Beatle fans. Too many know their story. I would rather see a documentary…but I’ll give this a try.

      1. One thing is for certain; such an audacious project will make or break Sam Mendes legacy. Will he go with the original vocals or not? He has to be careful not to do a ‘1917’ as well because for me, that was like watching a WW1 museum with a pulse or a sanitised video game. You can make it seem too real which could be mistaken for a documentary. He’s going to be on thin ice treading this one.

      2. Well I don’t believe it will be 4 movies…I believe he will sync them up into one or two. It would take at least two to make it. I want it realistic…I don’t want a Queen redo and having wrong info…so it will be hard but they gave their release on all of the music.

      3. They obviously have faith in him and I imagine will overview his output ala Elton John with ‘Rocketman’ who had his hands all over the project. I liked ‘Rocketman’ for at least exposing audiences who otherwise would not have been familiar with him like here in Latin America. After repeated views my listening enjoyment has soured since John’s incredible voice isn’t centrepiece. Yeh, I imagine they will steer clear of a Queen-like adaptation.

      4. Personally Matt….I would rather have an in depth documentary because the Anthology was so whitewashed…they touched on things but avoided a lot of the late stuff. If Lennon were alive he would have included it.
