It’s something about those 1960s garage band songs that I really like. Songs like Louie Louie, A Little Bit Of Soul, Hang On Sloopy, and the list goes on and on. They were not epic complicated songs…no just fun songs for everyone to enjoy and relate to.
This is one of the most negative songs ever recorded. The word “no” appears 100 times and “nobody” gets sung 46 times, according to rock critic Dave Marsh.
A couple of years ago, as I did with House MD, I found an older show called The Office and I loved it. I binged it twice through. They did an incredible one-take intro using this song in the 7th season that I’ll have posted below.
I give them an A+ on having a unique band name… They were an American rock band from Youngstown, Ohio…originally known as The Human Beingz but their name was spelled wrong (Beinz) on their contract but they just left it that way. I remember hearing this on Kill Bill Vol 1 and also on oldies radio stations through the years. The song peaked at #8 on the Billboard 100 in 1968.
This was a cover…and that surprised me. It was originally done by the Isley Brothers in 1962. It was written in the studio by Ronald Isley, Rudolph Isley, and O’Kelly Isley, Jr.
Another trivial thing about this song… these are the dances it lists… The Shingaling, The Skate, The Boogaloo, and The Philly. And if you listen to the end of the song…their bass player Mel Pachuta is hitting an empty Pepsi bottle with a drumstick. The producer wanted something different and that made him happy. You can clearly hear it at the end.
Nobody But Me
No-no, no, no, no-no-no, no, no-no, no, no-no
Na-no, no, na-no, no-no, na-no, no-no, no, no-no, no
Nobody can do the (Shing-a-ling) like I do
Nobody can do the (Skate) like I do
Nobody can do (Boogaloo) like I do
Nobody can do (Philly) like I do
Well, don’t you know
I’m gonna skate right through
Ain’t nobody do it but me
Nobody but me (Nobody but me)
Yeah, I’m gonna spin, I do
Ain’t nobody do it but me, babe
(Nobody but me)
Well, let me tell you nobody
Nobody but me
Let me tell you, nobody
(Nobody) nobody
(Nobody) nobody
(Nobody) nobody
(Nobody) nobody
(Nobody) nobody
(Nobody) nobody
(Nobody)
No-no, no, no, no, no-no-no, no, no-no, no, no-no
Na-no, no, na-no, no-no, na-no, no-no, no, no-no, no
Nobody can do the (Shing-a-ling) like I do
Nobody can do the (Skate) like I do
Nobody can do (Boogaloo) like I do
Nobody can do (Philly) like I do
Ooh, yeah
Nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody

The Isley’s were certainly inspirational for Rock bands! I totally forgot about that intro to the office but I can say I know this song!

I never get tired of watching that Kill Bill scene.

That scene is longer than I remember it, and she isn’t done yet. The female villains are a little more difficult to finish off.

I loved the part where she snatched the eye eyed girl’s other eye out and left her to get poisoned by the snake.

Ah yes, Darryl Hannah, aka Neil Young’s wife. There were some diabolical females in the Kill Bill movies.

Thanks Jim…I love that scene… sorry it took me so long to get back today…I was in an all day meeting.

Cool videos. What a catchy song! I heard George Thorogood’s version of it recently.

I’ve never heard that one before…I’ll check it out.

a garage rock standard. I know the song but I was thinking ‘I don’t think that’s the one I know’ and then I read B Corocoran’s comment and I think it is Thorogood that I grew up hearing and know best.

Funny thing is…I never heard that version before in my life…
we are taking small break…it’s a Groucho line I’m thinking of…”I thought my razor was dull until I heard his speech”
That is how I feel today…I don’t go on to after Lunch…mine is a cozy 10 minutes…others are 45 minutes and more.,. IT always has less to say.

well, good luck! Hope the 10 min fly by

While you’re in your meeting you could imagine everyone in there getting up to do a big dance number, Office style!

Lol I would love that! I just gave my presentation I wish I would have seen this earlier! Still in this damn thing pretending I’m paying attention lol.

RAM it through and relax a BIT. Switch to mute for the rest of the conference. Close eyes contemplatively- but don’t snore audibly.

The snoring part is hard not to do! Yea I did pretty well. The first thing I said was: “Good to see you…I will promise you one thing…I will not subject you to an IT guy rambling on…because even I don’t want to hear an IT guy rambling on”… I had them after that….and yes…I RAMMED through it.. 15 minutes top.

Love that… then I’m right into late ’60s and early ’70s gararge music.
I’ve never watched the US version of The Office, but that sequence is excellent … and Tarantino is a genius when it comes to picking more obscure sounds for his soundtracks. Somehow, they always fit the scenes so well. 🙂

Martin Scorsese is good at it also… like with the Stones songs in Goodfellas…Monkey Man was great.

Totally surprised after listening to the unfamiliar Isley Brothers original then hear the very familiar Human Beinz cover. The Office, both the English original version and the American remake, are on my to-watch list. The lip synch opener is priceless!

Lisa…for some reason I didn’t think you liked that show…why would I think that?
I just found it a year or so ago… we binged on it like we did House MD…we went through The Office twice! Its goofy but funny.

I haven’t watched many episodes of it, which might suggest I don’t like it, but I just haven’t been strongly enough compelled by it to watch it all. You know that Ricky Gervais was in the British series and was a little more pudgy than he is now. I love Ricky and would probably watch the British version first. I also love Steve Carrell though, so maybe I’ll have to toss a coin.

I’ve watched both…I like them both…totally different but a good different if that makes sense.

Max, that’s good to know. I watched the American version of Shameless and adored it (and still do!) Decided to try and watch the British original and realized it was exactly the same so gave up quickly on it.

Good Garage stomper of a song. ‘Drew Carey show’ did ‘5 O’clock World’ in the intro for a series too.

Yes-yes, yes, yes, yes-yes-yes, yes, yes-yes, yes, yes-yes, it’s a peculiar band name and a fun song. And no-no, no, no, no-no-no, no, no-no, no, no-no, I didn’t know it, neither the Human Beinz rendition, nor the origianl by the Isley Brothers, which I also think sounds hot! And, yes-yes, yes, yes, yes-yes-yes, yes, yes-yes, yes, yes-yes, the performance by the cast of The Office is entertaining!
