Any song that contains train references I usually like and this one is no exception. I was surprised when I heard this song was by Cinderella. They had changed themselves into a bluesy hard rock roots band. The other song that I heard off the album at the time was Shelter…and that one I loved also.
The song peaked at #44 on the Billboard 100, #60 in Canada, #54 in the UK, and #13 on the Billboard Rock Charts in 1991.
In 1990 we were the house band at club at the time. We never played new music but I learned this one just to see the faces of the people when we played a new song. We did this one and Jealous Again by the Black Crowes.
They never really got a chance to follow this momentum up with another album. n 1991, Keifer lost his voice due to a paresis of his vocal cords. After operations, they didn’t follow up this album until 1994 (Still Climbing) and by then grunge had taken over and Cinderella was dropped from the record company after the album went nowhere.
They reformed in 1996 and would tour off and on until 2014.
Heartbreak Station
Waiting at the station
Tears filling up my eyes
Sometimes the pain you hide
Burns like a fire inside
Lookin’ out my window
Sometimes it’s hard to see
The things you want in life
Come and go so easily
She took the last train out of my heart
The last train
And now I think I’ll make a brand new start
The last train out of my heart
Watching the days go by
Thinking ’bout the plans we made
Days turn into years
Funny how they fade away
Sometimes I think of those days
Sometimes I just hide away
I’m waiting on that 9:20 train
I’m waiting on a memory
She took the last train out of my heart
The last train
And now I think I’ll make a brand new start
The last train out of my heart, yeah
My lady’s on the fly
And she’s never coming back
My love is like a steam train
Rolling down the tracks, yeah, yeah
The last train out of my heart
The last train
And now I think I’ll make a brand new start
Took the last train out of my heart, yeah
she took the last train, out of my heart
(The last train) she took the last train
And now I think I’ll make a new start
Last train out of my heart
so much big hair, all in one place ! )

That is a perfect description Beth! I wished I would have used it.

Great pick. The had John Paul Jones do the strings on this track and another song as well from this record. Cinderella with each album got better and had the chops as Keifer is a genius yet people watched with there eyes the look they had but didn’t listen with there ears as these guys had more substance than many an act back in the day…

I like Keifer a lot. They got labeled as strictly a hair band…they were quite different than the rest. This album was very rootsy to me.

Keifer came to town about 5 years ago and put on a stellar show including a wicked cover of Purple Rain.

I liked his guitar playing as well as his voice. If his voice wouldn’t have messed up…they would have built off of this album I’m sure.

I don’t think I’ve heard this one before, but it’s not bad. I wouldn’t have guessed it was them, Deke maybe explained that if JPJ was working on it.

They turned from “Hair Metal” to a bluesy rock band…they made quite a change. Maybe Deke can answer this about them…did they do the Hair Metal phase to get their foot in the door to do this? Maybe it was just a progression.

It was a progression as even with the first album Night Songs that title track had them headed into the same direction that they followed on Long Cold Winter. They never made the same record twice and once band that when I got into vinyl got those first three albums…

I can see that…I need to listen to the first two more again.

Reminds me so much of Guns N Roses Lite.

I agree they got “tagged” as a hair band, but they sounded more unique to me than they probably get credit for. Underrated group.

Same here. I wasn’t expecting this album but now listening…as Deke said in the comments…it was a progression to this.

While their name definitely is familiar in the hair metal context, I wasn’t able to name one of their tunes. This song is pretty good and unexpected.
