The vocals on this song won me over when I heard it. Keyboard player Nickey Barclay nails the vocals on this song. She goes from 0 to 100 and she turns into a Janis Joplin. It builds up slowly and then Barclay wails the vocal while June Millington breaks out on the slide guitar at the end to a huge crescendo. The drummer Alice de Buhr does a really cool rhythm pattern for this song…
There have been a few all female rock bands (not enough) but this one…to me is the most talented one I’ve heard. They were not a “girl group”…they were a full fledged rock band. They didn’t have the pop song to take them over the top but for what they did…they didn’t need it.
The live version I have on the Midnight Special is much better than the studio cut. This song was written by Randy Newman and it has such wonderful lines in it.
I saw a vampire, I saw a ghost
Everybody scared me, but you scared me the most
In the dream I had last night
From all the clips I’ve seen of Fanny live…their live sound just wasn’t caught in the studio and they were much better live. BTW…love the eye-shadow or glam-shadow (thanks Vic)…what ever it is…another reason to love the seventies.
Last Night I Had A Dream
Last night I had a dream
You were in it, and I was in it with you
And everyone that I know
And everyone that you know was in my dream
I saw a vampire, I saw a ghost
Everybody scared me, but you scared me the most
In the dream I had last night
In the dream I had last night
In my dream
Last night I had a dream
Scared me before you know I woke up screaming
Saw all of my in-laws and whole lot of outlaws
In my dream
I saw the wolfman Jack and saw the mummy too
In the dream I had last night
In the dream I had last night
In that dream
It started out in a barnyard at sundown
And everyone was laughing
And you were lying on the ground
You said, “honey, can you tell me what your name is?”
“Honey, can you tell me what your name is?”
I said, “damn damn what your game is”
You know what my game is
In the dream I had last night
In the dream I had last night
I saw a vampire, I saw a ghost
Everybody scared me, but you scared me the most
In the dream I had last night
In the dream I had last night
In the dream I had last night, in my dream
In the dream I had last night, in my dream
Last night I had a dream
You were in it, and I was in it with you
And everyone that I know
And everyone that you know was in my dream
I saw a vampire, I saw a ghost
Everybody scared me, but you scared me the most
In the dream I had last night
In the dream I had last night, in my dream

Saw them in Glasgow … supporting Jethro Tull I think. Loved them! 🙂

Thank you so much for commenting. It’s great to hear from people who actually saw them.

not bad. Your reference to the clip was close to what I was thinking…. they just came out too soon. they’d probably have done much better in the MTV age when people actually saw them, and the door had been opened by the Go Gos.

I also read where the record company wanted them to dress alike etc…they said no. It wasn’t fair asking that…Jethro Tull didn’t and other bands. I like Randy Newman’s version of this also.
The next one I post could have been a hit…when I listen to it…I think it fit right in with what was going on…and a pop type Motown song they wrote.

Randy Newman is a fine songwriter… and one who can be covered well by artists in several different genres equally well.

Yes he is…I thought I heard it before…and I couldn’t figure out where.

I saw them in 1973. However, I cannot verify when because for some odd reason I can only find a record of one show in Chicago. You are welcome to join our FB Induct Fanny into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group.
June Millington, Alice de Buhr, Patti Quatro Ericson, Brie Howard-Darling, Fanny: The Right to Rock documentary creator-Bobbi Jo Hart, original group photographer Linda Wolf, Pod Cast hosts with Alice-Byron Wilkins, and Dr. Kristen Hillaire Glasgow all participate. Jean is still recovering from the stroke, but she appeared with the current Fanny lineup recently in LA.

Thanks Jim… I didn’t know if you remembered them or saw them open for someone.

Now that I think about it, I vaguely remember you writing about this group before, but it may have been a post by someone else.

I think if they would have been guys instead of females they would have been superstars. This is a talented group of musicians that sound great together, alas they are beautiful females 😦

That is what I say in my next post about them. If the public didn’t like them because they were female… they were damn stupid.

I doubt any of them did drugs that night lol

I like their version of this better than Randy Newman’s. Thes ladies knew how to do a song!

Yes they do! These ladies were the real deal…and that is nothing against the Bangles or Go Go’s…Fanny were in another league musician wise.
They backed up Barbara Streisand on her album “Barbra Joan Streisand “… I was never a fan of her but she had her pick of musicians.

They were so good. I too was admiring that eye shadow. It was very 70s and very ‘Bowie’.

The Hinoeuma mentioned glam rock….it never entered my mind when I saw it for some stupid reason but you two are right. It was during that time.

Dude, they are badass. And, welcome. It is glam-shadow. That is just like Ace Frehley’s face paint/

Yes they are…I’ll post the other song in a couple of weeks. That is the second or third person who commented that saw them.

I like the Randy Newman original, but this takes it to a different place and it’s cool. The Janis Joplin comparison makes sense. That guitar solo at the end is pretty cool too.
