This great song is listed under Celtic Punk. This song was on an album with the same name released in 1988. Its been called the Pogues best album and it peaked at #3 in the UK and #4 in New Zealand in 1988. This song was was originally recorded for the “Straight Too Hell” soundtrack
This is such pure music and I’m a sucker for a well placed accordion.
The Pogues formed in Ireland in 1982 by Shane MacGowan. The band reached international prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. MacGowan left because of drinking problems and was replaced for a time with Joe Strummer and then with Spider Stacy on vocals before breaking up in 1996.
They reformed with MacGowan in 2001 and are still together and playing. The band was awarded the life-time achievement award at the annual Meteor Ireland Music Awards in February 2006.
If I Should Fall From Grace with God
If I should fall from grace with god
Where no doctor can relieve me
If I’m buried ‘neath the sod
But the angels won’t receive me
Let me go boys
Let me go boys
Let me go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry
This land was always ours
Was the proud land of our fathers
It belongs to us and them
Not to any of the others
Let them go boys
Let them go boys
Let them go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry
Bury me at sea
Where no murdered ghost can haunt me
If I rock upon the waves
No corpse can lie upon me
It’s coming up three boys
Keeps coming up three boys
Let them go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry
If I should fall from grace with god
Where no doctor can relieve me
If I’m buried ‘neath the sod
And still the angels won’t receive me
Let me go boys
Let me go boys
Let me go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry
Enjoyed that! I didn’t hear their music until streaming came along. I would have been a big fan from the start. That’s interesting Joe Strummer joined them for awhile.

Didn’t you post about them before? I may be thinking of another band.

It is! There’s a 1970s song I’ve probably posted for St Patrick’s Day. It’s Luke Kelly and the Dubliners singing Black Velvet Band. Which would be an indicator of how much I’d like the Pogues. 🙂

My memory is tricky but I thought there was a connection somehow with the Irish part at least.

Your memory of who writes about what music is way better than mine!

now this one I remember well from the 80s. Real ‘get you moving’ type song as many of theirs were.

I do remember them some back then…it’s been a while though.

I daresay this is an Irish Anthem. They are National Treasures.

I think my dislike for the accordion came from my parents always watching the Lawrence Welk show.

Yea I don’t like it in everything….John Mellencamp knows where to put one.

I like this third album a lot – it seems like their peak to me.

Amazing music, Max. I haven’t listened to The Pogues for some time, so pulled up the album. I also dig “Fairytale of New York” from that record.

You had to know I was a fan. One of the best shows I attended.

I didn’t but I figured it because this is pure music… authentic as hell and real

Yeah, no kidding. Well said. Seeing them was like walking into some crazy Irish/Scotts ale house way back when. The band and the audience was pretty well oiled. Small venue so it was fantastic. Acoustic fury.

I’m suddenly reminded of The Proclaimers. Love Irish/Scottish music.
