Batman 1966 – 1968

Cool hideout, Cool theme, Cool uniforms, Hot Batgirl and the Coolest car. The Batman TV series ran from 1966-1968 with 120 episodes. This was a fun campy show…not a dark drama searching for the reasons why Batman is a vigilante.

I was in the generation after this aired but I loved watching the reruns. Back in the mid-seventies, I was 8 and under the impression that Batman, Gilligans Island, and The Monkees were still making these fun shows. Batman was so colorful and expressive with it’s POW, BOOM, ZAP comic book play. The campiness played great in this show.

Adam West played the campy Batman perfectly and his ward…Burt Ward was just as good with his part. One of the great things about Batman was the villains. Cesar Romero did a great Joker. He may be my favorite Joker.  Burgess Meredith as the Penguin and Frank Gorshin as the Riddler was also perfectly cast. I always liked Catwoman played by Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt. Last but certainly not least Bat Girl played by Yvonne Craig.

Lee Meriwether acted as Catwoman in the movie. Yes, there was a movie that they made in 1966! Like the series, it’s just as fun! It has the infamous bat-shark repellent in the movie.

The Batmobile! I loved that car. It started life as a 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car. George Barris did his magic and turned it into what we now know as the Batmobile. My personal favorite of all the Batman cars.

The cool theme song was composed by Neal Hefti.

I want to thank blainerestaurantreport for suggesting Batman to write about… He also told me that Burt Ward got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame…naturally beside Adam West. Congrats Burt!

  1. Burt Ward and Julie Newmar are the only two cast members still living. Hard to imagine, but there you go. I read somewhere that Julie made her own costume for the audition, and it was so good they used it for the show. I think she might have been my first celebrity crush.

    And Yvonne Craig…. wow…

    1. Man that is cool. I would get off the school bus and I saw Gilligans Island, Bewitched, the Monkees, and then Batman… it was so much fun. Glad you enjoyed it!

  4. Also, there was a dinner theater here called the Beverly Dinner Playhouse. My mom took me there a few times in the late 70’s with her old friends. You’d see a play while they fed you. Cesar Romero was the star of one, and I was excited as hell! I only knew him as the Joker of course, but my mom, being born in 1927 knew him from a lot more. I could care less. His greatest achievement, in my teenage view, was The Joker!

    1. How cool is that! He was a great actor and it’s funny he refused to shave his mustache so they just powdered over it and I never could tell until I was told and with high def tvs.

      1. definitely Kevin Smith…haven’t done the research but I expect he’d be there just as a fan since he’s a noted comic book fan and , seems like maybe Ward appeared in one of his movies (“Chasing Amy”? Smith was a comic book maker in that one…)

      2. I want to visit that area one day. I’m a huge silent movie fan and would like to visit the sites that still stand…Plus I love the Dodgers.

      1. I agree! I’ve blogged about the show before. LOVE the villains! Gorshin, Romero, and Meredith were just amazing! All the books I read on the show said that they always had a script ready for Meredith.

        Yes, it was campy, but it was SO much fun!!

      2. I had another blogger request me do it…so I thought what the heck…I needed something anyway…then another one asked me to do Tales From The Darkside….so I did that one lol.

        I was fun…you are right…I like the modern stuff but it’s not as fun.

  9. I’m with you! they should have left well enough alone – this was the only Batman, and Batmobile – we needed! I remember having a little Hot Wheels size model of the car when I was a kid; gotta admit I was a bit jealous because my brother had a bigger one (like a 1/24 or so diecast of it).

  11. adored Batman as a kid and took it on face value serious, and then as a teen I rediscovered it to be a goldmine of campy in-jokes and taking the micky out of my beloved super-heroes and super-villains and loved it the more. What was so glorious was veteran actors guesting and having an obvious ball having an excuse to go OTT, and the format fit right in with that period of time culturally.
