The Who – All This Music Must Fade —Powerpop Friday

I can’t say a lot about this song because it is new. Thank you runsewread for pointing out this new release. They have released two tracks off the new album WHO being released on December 16th. Ball and Chain and All This Music Must Fade are the two new songs being previewed. Ball and Chain will be the Next Post.

Roger’s voice sounds really strong and the song sounds like vintage Who to me.

Townshend and Daltrey are joined on the album by drummer Zak Starkey and bassist Pino Palladino.

The Who have shared their contemplative new song “All This Music Must Fade,” the latest single off the rockers’ long-awaited new LP WHO, out December 6th.

The opening track on WHO, the new song takes a tongue-in-cheek attitude about originality in music as well as the band’s own legacy.

Pete Townshend said in a statement that the song is “dedicated to every artist who has ever been accused of ripping off someone else’s song. Seriously? Our musical palette is limited enough in the 21st century without some dork claiming to have invented a common chord scheme.”

“I don’t care / I know you’re gonna hate this song / And that said / We never really got along,” Roger Daltrey sings in the opening verse. “It’s not new, not diverse / It won’t light up your parade / It’s just simple verse / All this music will fade / Just like the edge of a blade.”

All This Music Must Fade

(What’s mine is mine
What’s yours is yours, and what’s mine is mine
What’s yours is yours, and what’s mine is mine
What’s yours is yours, and what’s mine is mine)

I don’t care
I know you’re gonna hate this song
And that’s it
We never really got along
It’s not new, not diverse
It won’t light up your parade
It’s just simple verse

All this music will fade
Just like the edge of a blade
All this music will fade
Just like the edge of a blade

I’m long gone
And I ain’t never coming back
[?]
I’ve never really quite gone bland
I’m not blue, I’m not pink
I’m just grey, I’m afraid
And it seems in a blink

All this music will fade
(All this music will fade)
Just like the edge of a blade
(Just like the edge of a blade)
All this music will fade
(All this music will fade)
Just like the edge of a blade
(Just like the edge of a blade)

What’s yours is yours, and what’s mine is mine
What’s mine is yours, and what’s yours is mine
What’s mine is yours, and what’s yours is mine
What’s yours is yours, and what’s mine is mine

I don’t mind
Other guys ripping off my song
I’d be a liar
If I said I never done no wrong
Oh, this sound that we share
Has already been played
And it hangs in the air

All this music will fade
(All this music will fade)
Just like the edge of a blade
(Just like the edge of a blade)
All this music will fade
(All this music will fade)
Just like the edge of a blade

I don’t care
I know you’re gonna hate this song
And that’s it
‘Cause we never really got along
It’s not new, not diverse
It won’t light up your parade
It’s just simple verse

All this music will fade
Just like the edge of a blade
All this music will fade
Just like the edge of a blade
All this music will fade

What’s yours is yours, and what’s mine is mine
What’s mine is yours, and what’s yours is mine
What’s mine is yours, and what’s yours is mine
What’s yours is yours

(Yours is yours, and what’s mine is mine
And what’s mine is mine, and what’s mine is yours
Who gives a fuck?)

    1. The songs are very strong. This is a new album I will buy. I was floored when I listened to both of them. They sound like themselves without sounding like a nostalgia act.

We picked her out…she was the one the people said was a “live wire” and she is living up to that description. I’m still trying to get a picture of her standing still. The only time she is still is right after she eats. We met the parents…they are huge…larger than Molly was. We are in for a few weeks of bedlam…you cannot keep your eyes off of her for a minute or she will be chewing something… We are now moving wires or anything that is chewable off the floor. She is great though…we are having a good time.

      1. So true, they avoided the nostalgia sound, and the adult contemporary sound. They are like angry youth, but made it the angry voice of experience.

I swear, puppies can chew through armored trucks and stacks of firewood. 🙂 She sounds absolutely adorable. Congrats! She hit the puppy lottery with her new family. With Myrtle’s puppy activities, I told myself just get through the first year. But we are into year 2 now and she’s still got a long way to go. She chews only her own things now, but leash walking takes everything I’ve got to keep her reigned in. And the muddy paws after a rain..good lord! It’s all pure fun…except when I’m trying to get something done, haha. Enjoy every moment. I’ll look forward to a picture, when she finally is still for a second or two. 🙂

      2. Oh they can chew…and will try to chew everything. They are so much fun…like suddenly sitting down only to flip backwards.
Last night was rough because she missed her brothers and sisters but finally went to sleep around 1am…but she slept to about 6 which is more than I thought she would.

I might be asking you for advice. It;s been 10 years since we had a puppy. They keep you on your toes. Oh Dear…year two and she still chews lol.
It’s like having a 2 year old in the house…she keeps everyone running amuck…I hope to have something up within an hour or two.

      3. Oh those first nights. Poor little thing, and you. That’s something I don’t have with foster pups, because they don’t have families to miss. 😥 It really is like having a toddler, lovable, energetic and bounces off the walls.

Probably the best puppy advice I got from the humane society, was to give them a small confined area as their own, and then gradually expand it. If they have the run of the house, they are overwhelmed and don’t know which area to feel safe and comfortable in, and where they can learn not to soil their place. I have a wire kennel that’s big enough for them to walk around in, and then I gradually start opening up the room(s) around it. I don’t shut them in the kennel in a way that they feel like it’s a jail; I make it their place with food, water, treats, toys, bedding, etc. These days the kennel door is always open, but I occasionally drop a treat in there; and Myrtle knows whenever I leave the house, that there’s a treat waiting for her in her kennel. It doesn’t have to be a kennel; it can be a small room such as a bathroom.

      4. That is so sad about no families to miss. We looked for a rescue Saint but couldn’t find anything close. Of course one pops up yesterday…So yesterday without telling Jennifer…I found a rescue Saint in Knoxville that is 4 years old and is housebroken…the works… and needs a home. I applied lol…It’s a long shot but the dog gets along with other dogs very welll…

Someone will get it before us I think. But the good thing is she didn’t throw anything at me…she is all for it…we will see.

Thank you for that advice…We have been letting her run loose and I knew that wasn’t a great idea. We have a small bathroom next to the kitchen with tile floors…she loves tiles. We just forgot how to prepare for puppies…
That is a great idea with Myrtle… We will do that no doubt. We got use to Molly…she had the run of the house when she was older…but Martha is not older lol.

      5. Bailey named her after the Beatle song. I hope we get it also. He would be pretty much set…not much training so it’s not like we would have two toddlers…and he would make a good big brother.

      6. What broke my heart is alot of the rescue Saints were 8-9 years old…I felt selfish but we couldn’t do that. In the future I would like to because they deserve to be happy but after losing Molly…we couldn’t do that again so soon.
I think he would be good.

  1. Not bad. I knew they were on tour (a friend of mine back north just saw them in Toronto) but didn’t know they’d put out new material. That one sounds pretty good first time through. Amazing they can sound both like their old selves yet still new. Good for them!
Puppy sounds like fun! You might have written somewhere in there, but I missed it if so- how old is it?

    1. That is what I said when I first heard it…they sound like themselves but new at the same time. That is something to pull off.
I just published it. Oh she is 7 weeks old.
