I was reading Dave’s article at A Sound Day about the Eurythmics and he mentioned the band that Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart were in before the Eurythmics. I can’t get their version of the song out of my head. The Tourist formed in 1976 and broke up in 1980. Stewart and Lennox would continue to work together and hit gold with the Eurythmics.
The song was written by Mike Hawker and Ivor Raymonde and first made famous by Dusty Springfield in 1964. After seeing Lennox and Stewart with the Eurythmics…this is fun to see and watch.
This song peaked at #83 on the Billboard 100 in 1980 and #4 in the UK in 1979.
I Only Want To Be With You
I dont know what it is that makes me love you so
I only know I never want to let you go
cause youve started something
Oh, cant you see?
That ever since we met
Youve had a hold on me
It happens to be true
I only want to be with you
It doesnt matter where you go or what you do
I want to spend each moment of the day with you
Oh, look what has happened with just one kiss
I never knew that I could be in love like this
Its crazy but its true
I only want to be with you
You stopped and smiled at me
And asked if Id care to dance
I fell into your open arms
And I didnt stand a chance
Now listen honey
I just want to be beside you everywhere
As long as were together, honey, I dont care
cause youve started something
Oh, cant you see?
That ever since we met
Youve had a hold on me
No matter what you do
I only want to be with you
Oh, oh, you stopped and you smiled at me
And asked if Id care to dance
I fell into your open arms
And I didnt stand a chance
Now hear me tell you
I just want to be beside you everywhere
As long as were together, honey, I dont care
cause youve started something
Oh, cant you see?
That ever since we met
Youve had a hold on me
No matter what you do
I only want to be with you
I said no matter, no matter what you do
I only want to be with you
I’ve loved this cover for years, but it took me ages to realise that it was Annie Lennox singing. Once it clicked I wondered how on earth I didn’t notice sooner…

I knew nothing about it until I read Dave’s post…always knew the song of course but this is fun version. It’s kinda shocking to see her in this…happy and dancing and then seeing the Eurythmics…always kind of dour.

I had the same reaction too about how happy she seemed

They did this almost as well as Dusty Springfield. Annie’s kind of cute here…

She really is… and to see her like this compared to later on…is different.

Her and Dave look so young here. She started her fashion flaring early. Wonderful gems, Max, and glad Dave got you looking for them.

It was fun to see her sing soemthing so poppy…I really enjoyed it. If it wasn’t for Dave I would NOT have found this…that is for sure.

thanks for the link and tip of the cap. It’s a great song and a good version of it. I too think The tourists version is a little more likable than majority of Eurythmics tunes

And much better than the Bay City Rollers version. No thank you for the heads up on it. Never would I have guessed.
