Fabulous Poodles – Mirror Star

Hanspostcard recommended this song to me, and it stuck with me. I guess I’ll never forget the name of this band. I heard of the band before because I remember reading about them opening for The Kinks and Tom Petty. John Entwistle played on a few tracks on their first album and produced it. On this second album, Muff Winwood produced it. This song and Chicago Boxcar (Boston Back) are probably their best-known songs. 

The band was influenced by The Who and The Kinks, and you can tell. After listening to them a little, they have some pub rock, the punch of it, combined with really good pop songwriting. They formed in London in 1975, with Tony de Meur (vocals/guitar), Richie Robertson (bass/vocals), Bobby Valentino (violin/vocals), and Bryan Wernham (drums). From the start, they had a knack for mixing good pop songwriting with theatrical humor, with some British music hall thrown in. This song was written by Tony De Meur and John Parsons.

Like a lot of late ’70s UK pop/rock, Mirror Star didn’t tear up the charts, but it found a loyal following,  especially when the band opened for The Kinks on their U.S. tours. American audiences who were expecting another punk band got this odd pop/rock band. 

They released 3 albums between 1977 and 1979. This one was on their second album, Unsuitable, released in 1978. I’ve searched, and they didn’t seem to chart in the UK, which surprised me. This song did peak at #81 on the Billboard 100 in 1979.

Spencer Davis Group – Gimme Some Lovin’

I heard this song on an oldies channel in the mid-1980s, and it sounded so fresh and powerful. I remember wanting to know more about them, but books on the Spencer Davis Group were in short supply at that time. Before I started blogging, I knew very little about this band.

Let’s talk about the not-so-secret weapon here: Steve Winwood. The kid was 17, but he sings like a man three divorces deep with a gospel choir in his chest. He is simply electric when he plays or sings. No buildup, no easing into it, it’s all gas, no brakes, and all the more thrilling because of it. A teenage Steve Winwood, somehow sounding like a man who had lived five blues lifetimes by age seventeen.

The song peaked at #1 in Canada, #7 on the Billboard 100, #5 in New Zealand, and #2 in the UK in 1966. Steve Winwood’s voice and his B-3 organ drives this song. The Spencer Davis Group formed in 1963, with Spencer Davis on guitar, Pete York on drums, and Muff Winwood on bass, while his brother Steve Winwood, remarkably, was just 14 years old.

By 1966, the Spencer Davis Group had a few hits under their belt in the UK (Keep On Running, Somebody Help Me), but they needed something fast to keep the momentum going. Their producer, Jimmy Miller (who later remade the Stones) asked for an original song that would go over well in the US. So Steve Winwood sat down at the Hammond, punched out that legendary riff, and the band built the rest around it in about 30 minutes. Steve Winwood, Spencer Davis, and Muff Winwood are listed as the writers. 

In 1980, The Blues Brothers returned this song to the Billboard Top 20 when their cover reached #18.

Spencer Davis Group – I’m A Man

I’ve always liked those Steve Winwood singles released in the mid-sixties by The Spencer Davis Group. This song was the last single by The Spencer Davis Group released to feature Winwood. After this, he would leave them and form Traffic. Steve Winwood has one of the most distinctive voices in rock. You know his voice anywhere.

Steve Winwood and producer Jimmy Miller wrote this song. This is not the same song by Bo Diddley named I’m A Man. After this Jimmy Miller would start producing The Rolling Stones in their five-album stretch that became their foundation. Chicago would later record a version of this song.

This song was released as a non-album single in 1967. I’m A Man peaked at #1 in Canada,  #10 on the Billboard 100, and #9 in the UK. Not only did Steve Winwood leave but his bass-playing brother Muff Winwood left as well.

Some say the song is a  tribute to the African-American musical tradition, especially the blues and the R&B genres. Steve Winwood, the composer, was heavily influenced by the likes of Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, and other black artists who had revolutionized popular music in the 1950s and 1960s.

After this Steve Winwood would go on to Traffic, Blind Faith, and then a huge solo career. The two huge songs of The Spencer Davis Group are Gimme Some Lovin’ and this one. They are hard to beat.

Steve Winwood: “We were kind of experimenting with what is now called world music – it didn’t exist then – but Afro-Caribbean music which we’d been listening to, ‘I’m A Man’ was actually significant because it was the last Spencer Davis Group song before Traffic. So it was a significant transition because we were using these Afro-Caribbean elements in that music and then we went on in Traffic to combine that with many more elements like folk music and jazz and rock to try and combine all these elements.”
