When I first saw this video it highly amused me. Seeing Bon Scott in pigtails caught me off guard. They did a great version of this song…I will always turn to Van Morrison’s Them as my definite version, but this one is a lot of fun.
This song appeared on their debut album High Voltage released in 1974. Bon Scott was an excellent singer. He was in a pop band called The Valentines and it’s odd, to say the least seeing him singing in this band. He adapted well to what was asked of him with AC/DC.
The band toured relentlessly in the mid to late seventies and when they released Highway To Hell, it was a milestone for them. They set themselves up for a huge payday on the next album. Scott died in 1980 as they were starting on their new album which turned out to be the mega-selling Back In Black. I think if Scott had lived they would have had just as big of an album. The Highway To Hell album was the key to getting them known worldwide.
Blues great Big Joe Williams is credited with writing this song, but it was developed from a folk song titled “Long John,” which was recorded in 1934 by John and Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress. That recording captures the song sung by black prisoners at Darrington State Prison Farm in Texas. It was a popular tune because “Long John” was about an escaped prisoner on the run from authorities.

Agreed to the Max. It is such a cheeky, rollicking version of the classic song. Most of us were pretty shocked by Bon’s um, presentation when it first went to air on Australian tv!

Can’t say that it ranks among my top ten versions of the song.

Oh I like them as well…probably a little more with Bon… he set them up with those songs to make it…yea they rocketed to fame with Back in Black….I think if they would have had Bon…it would have happened the same.

An old blues classic that has been covered thousands of times. The high-speed version by AC/DC is ok, but I don’t really need it.

It doesn’t stack up to Them I admit…

Well, Big Joe Williams recorded the first version, but this one is rather iconic for me when it comes to the blues:

Wow that’s something. I wouldn’t have guessed in 100 tries it was him doing that Valentines song! His voice was a little rough for that song, but he did it ok…who’d think it?

He had some other pop songs where he was pretty soft….it’s amazing to look back on.

R.I.P. Bon Scott. Brian Johnson excelled in his place

He did…Johnson did a great job for sure…I tend to lean more toward the Bon era but I like Johnson a lot.

I’ve got an album by Geordie. Brian’s band before joining AC/DC of course.

I’ve heard a few of that bands songs…I like them and I heard his Hoover commercial he did around 1980 right before he joined.

The 2nd video reminds me of kabuki theater. Bon perfect the art of the scream. Love Back in Black, a head banger for sure.

Yep, I think the consensus is ‘a decent enough cover’ but not necessary, unless you’re a complete AC/DC collectorist.

Yea the biggest reason I posted this was I haven’t posted them in a while plus…come on obbverse…the pig tails! I just had to.

Oh yeah, I get it, you really had to! Quite a jump from the Valentines Teeny Bon/Bop look.

Man, I just love AC/DC. Time and again, they are proof rock doesn’t need to be complicated to roll. Seeing Bon Scott looking like Pipi Langstrumpf definitely is an added bonus.
With all that said, as much as I dig the Aussie rockers, I acknowledge Them has the edge with their rendition of “Baby Please Don’t Go.”

My biggest reaction to this song – video, actually – is how young Angus, Malcolm and the drummer (Phil Rudd?) all looked, like they were only 16.

Angus was 19-20 at the time but yea he looked young….no pun intended…yes Rudd is the drummer.
