This post is by one of my favorite bloggers. He covers a couple of rockabilly tunes by Carl Perkins and James McCartney…fun post.
I was probably in my twenties when I went through my own personal rockabilly phase, but, honestly, I don’t think I ever left it. I’ve always loved what some call roots, Americana, or oldies music. Rockabilly seems to encompass all of that along with some twangy country guitar. While Elvis Presley is probably the most well known Rockabilly Cat of all time, his predecessor Carl Perkins had an enormous influence on aspiring musicians like The Beatles and many others. During my personal rockabilly phase, I stumbled upon a really catchy Perkins tune called “Your True Love.”
I think the call-and-response vocal harmony is what really grabbed my attention. Just today, I found a version by James McCartney — the son of Sir Paul McCartney.
I basically know nothing about James McCartney, but I think this is a great cover. I would say it’s pretty SWINGIN’.
This song brings to mind…

Well that set my day off on a happy note! Carl Perkins over James McCartney however!

Those were fun to hear! It’s hard to beat Carl Perkins, but James has a great sound of his own. I’d gladly listen to more from him. Must be the genes. 🙂 Interesting post, Mojo.

I enjoyed that song a lot by Carl. On another matter, I hope you don’t me asking but I am writing about a song you posted – ‘In the Mood’ – Robert Plant. It seemed uncannily familiar to me, but I don’t know if it’s because I’d heard ‘In the Mood’ in my youth or because it has such a similar vibe to ‘Safety Dance’ – Men Without Hats. It may well be that I had heard both. Do they sound similar to you?

Oh I think it’s great… I remember In The Mood well Matt…when I got my first car I remember that song because it was just released.
The synth sound may be similar but that is it to me. I also like Big Log….

The two songs were released in the same year. There is so much similarity to me ears. Everything is just so about the other song. But that could me me. I highly doubt that.

It never occurred to me but I stay away from Safety Dance…I saw that video as a teen and it drove me bananas. I love In The Mood….but it very well could be!

That Carl Perkins is just awesome. But, holy cow, James McCartney? Honestly, I had not been aware of him! He’s not exactly out there, I guess.
Stella McCartney? Yep. Or the sons of other ex-Beatles like Julian Lennon, Dhani Harrison and Zak Starkey? Sure! But James McCartney?
His cover of “Your Tue Love”, which I think is pretty good, is the first song I’ve heard from him. I see he has released two solo albums. I guess I’ll have to check them out!

Oh I loved the cover of that song Chrisitian… I didn’t pay attention to the song at first and I was thinking Paul because I saw McCartney. I want to hear more of James’s work. He sounds really good in that song!

Nice example of the sound and quite a surprise to me- I didn’t know McC’s son was a musician, let alone one who likes early rock stylings! I remember in my area there was a rockabilly revival in the middish-80s , while the Stray Cats were big. There were several local bands playing that sort of material, one that I seem to recall that were fun live and put out a good disc was The Paladins…although it’s my understanding there’s a better-known band of that name that isn’t a Toronto rockabilly one.

The Paladins….oh yes…I have posted about them before way back.
His son sounded really good…when I saw McCartney I thought Paul at first. He sounds really good!
