I have heard mostly the 90s music from this band…I recently found this album from 1987 and love it. They formed in 1982 in Glasgow Scotland and are still together today. The only original member left is lead singer Bobby Gillespie. They have shifted in sound through the years. This song was during their power pop period.
This song was on the Sonic Flower Groove album released in 1987. It was met with mixed to bad reviews at the time. The bad reviews caused internal strife within the band. Two members Jim Beattie and Gavin Skinner subsequently resigned. The band then changed directions and shifted to a more rock sound. In the mid-eighties a Byrds sound was not exactly the height of popularity but it would start taking off with bands like REM soon after.
I love the jangling guitar and the overall sound of the song and album. This song, Imperial, Treasure Trip, and many more make this a very good album to me.
Most reviewers now look back on the album with praise. It charted at #62 in the UK charts in 1987. Gentle Tuesday peaked at #87 in the UK charts in 1987.

I have heard of Primal Scream, but this is the first time I listened to them. The name of the band makes me think about Yoko and I thought that was the type of music they did, but I love this jangly Byrds sound.
Yea I like this sound also but they did change in the 90s…
I really like this early-Byrds sound. I wish I’d heard it back in 1987 when it came out. I was working in a tiny town, and they were stuck on Michael Jackson, Wham, Madonna, etc. I don’t think this good sounding music had a chance of getting radio play against that, unfortunately.
I know…that music kept a lot of things off radio. That over produced sound killed everything even remotely different sounding.
Yes, and no variety or other listening options. I could have really used the internet and streaming radio back then. 😉
The only relief I got was Vanderbilt’s radio station that I would tune into and also an alternative channel that I would catch. Yes…it would have been different with those two things.
In Lawrence, I would have had those great options too. But in the small town remote location, nope.
I’ve heard their name a whole lot more than I’ve heard their music…I had impression they were a lot louder, harder (maybe their latter stuff was?). This is nice jangle pop though, pretty good.
Yes they were a little harder later on…they just picked the wrong time to do this…it’s great to me.

Love the song – great choice Max. I have heard the bands name but. Ever their music – like others I would not have expected a band with this name to sound like this – but that jangly guitar is heaven!
They didn’t sound like this too long…they changed right after this…I love this period.
I’ve never heard this, but I like Screamadelica a lot. Doesn’t sound way different than what The Stone Roses were doing at a similar time.
I’ve checked some of the Stone Roses out…I like them and plan to have something by them. I wish Primal Scream would have stuck here a little longer.
Def hear the Byrds guitar in there. I also heard some very nice guitar fluourishes in there. Not bad!
