Cheap Trick – Come On, Come On …. Power Pop Friday

It’s been a while since we covered Cheap Trick and the time has come now. This is a power pop gem from the In Color album released in 1977. Cheap Trick is one of those bands that can cross genres with rock, pop, and heavy metal fans liking them.

This album was released the year before their Cheap Trick at Budokan album that would break their career open. This album has the studio version of I Want You To Want Me that would be a hit off of that live album

This album is a great album as well. It has Southern Girl, Hello There, and The Clock Strikes Ten just to name a few.

In Color peaked at #73 in the Billboard Album Chart in 1977 (I found no Canadian chart for this)…and #30 in Japan…a country which would be important in their career. The song was written by  Rick Nielsen.

This song reminds me of a warm seventies evening around twilight cruising with your friends…with a Cheap Trick T-Shirt on of course.

Come On, Come On

Ooo I’m feelin’ good
Oh so good
Don’t you ruin it tonight, tonight
It’s been so long since I don’t know when
Ooo treat me, treat me, treat me right
Don’t be like sheep and follow the flock
Show me you really want to be mine

Ooo I’m feelin’ good
Oh so good
Don’t you ruin it tonight, tonight
It’s been so long since I don’t know when
Ooo treat me, treat me, treat me right
Don’t be like sheep and follow the flock
Show me you really want to be mine

Come on, come on
I know you can do it
Come on, come on
There ain’t nothing to it
Come on, come on
I know you believe me
Come on, come on
You can see the real me
Every day, every day
I need you, I want you
Come a little closer to my face
Oh little girl
I need you now

  1. My entry point into these guys was Budokan back in 79 so I heard the live version of this one first.
Nielsen knows the fine art of power pop. lol Such a great band but a little goofy when it comes to a fan writing there whole discography on them and not writing anything personal about them.
I just picked up the 1980 CT album All Shook Up produced by George Martin…

    1. They were inspired by my heroes no doubt and they took that and roughed it up.
When I heard “If You Want My Love”…one of my friends said….That is the Beatles is they would have made it to the eighties.

      2. I’m hustling to finish up two as my next one is Monday I think and my next is right before I get back from vacation so want to get it down before I leave this coming week. But it’s a good kind of stress !

  2. Great song! And time for shameless plug…I finished my review of the debut album and the Cheap Trick series will start September 2nd!!! The song this album is on will get reviewed next weekend and come out maybe two weeks after that as Aerosmith will be the next week to start that series!! Okay, shameless plug over….these guys are freaking awesome. They have a sound that is unmistakably their own. Zander’s vocals are always spot on, Nielsen’s guitar work is underrated, Petersson’s bass along with Carlos’ drum are the perfect rhythm section. What more could you want.

    1. They combine everything I like…Big Star, Raspberries, and The Beatles with a great approach. I’ll be reading! Thanks John! Plug away!

  3. Nice tune, Max. Admittedly, I only know a handful of Cheap Trick songs like “Surrender” and “I Want You to Want Me” – probably another band I should further explore.

I’ve been listening to The Jayhawks. Unfortunately, the time I can devote to music is limited – way too limited!

    1. I’m lucky in that part…most of my job is on the computer figuring out server problems or whatever…I put music on to work by so I have a little time.
The Jayhawks are an interesting band…very talented and really good harmony wise.

  4. Love Cheap Trick. As with a lot of others my entry was Budakon. Surrender one of favorite songs ever a d even though Dream Police a bit more on the pop side I could listen to it on repeat for awhile (and I have 😀)
