I hope everyone is having a wonderful Sunday so far…I heard this song and liked it right away. Jimmy Buffett did a cover but I prefer John’s rawer version.
It came out in 2003 on the album “Beneath This Gruff Exterior” which peaked at #73 on the Billboard Album Charts. I don’t see any chart history on this song. John’s reputation has always been better than his chart success but other artists have covered his songs with great chart success…Bonnie Raitt being one.
John mentions “Wes and Jimmy” and that would be Jazz musicians Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Smith.
This song really spoke to me the first time I heard it. It wasn’t a massive hit but occasionally I’ll hear it on radio.
Window On The World
A broken promise i kept too long
A greasy shade and a curtain drawn
A broken glass and a heart gone wrong
That’s my window on the world
A cup of coffee in a shaky hand
Wakin’ up in a foreign land
Tryin’ to act like i got somethin’ planned
That’s my window on the world
[Chorus 1:]
That’s my window on the world
Could you stand a little closer, girl
Don’t let mama cut those curfs
That’s my window on the world
In broad daylight that circus tent pulled up stakes
I don’t know where it went
A close dark room with a busted vent
That’s my window on the world
I think about you when i’m countin’ sheep
I think about you, then i can’t sleep
I think that ocean is just so deep
That’s my window on the world
[Chorus 2:]
That’s my window on the world
Could you stand a little closer, girl
The queen of Sheba meets the duke of earle
That’s my window on the world
Down on indiana avenue
Wes and jimmy, man they played the blues
I guess they were only passin’ through
That’s my window on the world
[Chorus 1:]
That’s my window on the world
Could you stand a little closer, girl
Don’t let mama cut those curfs
That’s my window on the world
[Chorus 2:]
That’s my window on the world
Could you stand a little closer, girl
The queen of Sheba meets the duke of earle
That’s my window on the world
Nice music, new to me. The top of the World Trade center was called Windows of the World,

John’s one of those artists whose name I hear a lot but whose music I don’t really know much. Based on this one, maybe I should listen to him more

I like Hiatt – this is a nice song that I’d never heard before.

I heard it not too long after it came out on the radio…I love the references in it. Indiana Ave and the others.

Love it and could very well picture Bonnie Raitt cover it!

badfinger20,
This song contains a verse, ‘the queen of Sheba meets the duke of Earle, which caught my interest.
I want to write a post on the subject of the song title meaning relates to wisdom and link your post to the song title.
I have looked up various meanings but wonder what your interpretation might be what the song verse was intended to mean, possibly from you vast source on songs before I post.
Regards and goodwill blogging.

That caught my attention also. Sometimes I go with first instincts and I don’t think this is right at all…but there is an orchestra piece called The Arrival of Queen Sheba and of course The Duke of Earl is a 50s doo woop song…I didn’t know if he meant those styles mixing…but I will tell you now that probably isn’t it.
That lyric caught my ear also…also another lyric I also heard as “Don’t let mama cut those curls” is really “Don’t let mama cut those “curfs”… I’ve checked everywhere and that is the lyric.
I’m looking forward to reading your post. I hardly ever repeat myself on posts but this one I posted when I had no readers…so I brought it back so people could see it…I really like wordplay and this one has it.
I’m glad others feel the same.

Badfinger20,
Thanks for your reply which I believe we agree. I wrote my post and linked you post before waiting for your reply because at my age, you can’t afford to wait..
Perhaps you can add your comment to the post.

I remember Hiatt’s Slow Turning & Perfectly Good Guitar. I’m not really a fan.

You gotta know I’m a Hiatt guy. Cool catch on the Wes and Jimmy thing. I have a few records by them. One where they’re both eating sandwiches on the cover. Who’s idea was that? Hiatt never takes a wrong turn.
(You’re stuck with me for a bit Max. I have some catching up to do)

Yea I knew you would be…he sings and writes from his heart…and it shows. When I first heard the song of course I looked up Wes and Jimmy because that is who I am…and loved what I’ve heard.
Man you stay as long as you want dude.

John is just flat out great. I get locked into that funky jazz of Wes and Jimmy. There’s a whole ocean of similar stuff. Wes always gets mentioned as a guitar innovator from a lot of guitarists. Wes just has that funky organ sound. Love it.
