Go ego trip’n again tonight
Tell the same lies they work all right
Back in 1991, I was going out a lot and I really related to this song. I had the cassette of Whenever We Wanted by Mellencamp and it contained a few hits. This one was a minor hit but the one that I wore out.
It peaked at #36 in the Billboard 100 but was a bigger hit in Canada where it peaked at #8 in 1991. It did make it to #1 on the Mainstream Rock charts.
This album contained Get A Leg Up, Now More Than Ever, Last Chance, and Love and Happiness.
Whenever We Wanted peaked at #17 in the Billboard Album Charts, #8 in Canada, #39 in the UK, and #40 in New Zealand.
Again Tonight
Run in circles again tonight
Hump the moon again tonight
Gonna wear my dancin’ shoes out tonight
Gonna have myself a big time again tonight
[Chorus:]
Again tonight
Again tonight
Again tonight
Girl’s got lightning
Underneath her skirt
Boys try to touch it
For whatever it’s worth
In the morning
She’s just gonna be hurt
She wonders is it worth it again tonight
[Chorus]
Gonna catch that cloud tonight
Nine, cloud nine
Gonna try and catch that cloud tonight
Nine, cloud nine
Again tonight
Can you hold me baby again, again tonight
Can you sing
Can you dance baby
Can you sing
Can you hold me again tonight
Baby can you sing
Go ego trip’n again tonight
Tell the same lies they work all right
Gonna wear my dancin’ shoes out tonight
Probably make a fool of myself again tonight
[Chorus]
I went to a number of Cleveland Indians games in the mid 90’s and they would play this song after every game. I don’t know if they still do or not.

That was when the Indians were really good.

Yes right when they moved to Jacobs Field. Great teams- just came up short in the Series.

I remember Orel pitched for them…I was rooting for him hard. That team should have won. They were better than Atlanta….or so I thought. That was the only year that I lost betting against the Braves…I think it was a dollar but it was my pride that hurt.

They just lacked great pitching- the pitching was better than average they lacked that one ace.. the hitting- what a line-up! Exciting team to watch.

They were a hitting machine. Up and down the lineup. Eddie Murray was on that team also and he did very well. That lineup was great. I didn’t care for Belle…although he was great… but the others I liked. That guy was just Mr. Angry lol.

Belle is kind of forgotten- due to his personality- but he was a dominating hitter- the best on that team- which also had a young Manny Ramirez.

I remember he signed with the Orioles and I didn’t hear much from him until he retired early because of something..Mr Freeze…I hope he has calmed down now.

a fine rocker that I must admit, I’d forgotten. The whole album was very good- I should reacquire it. I played the CD a whole lot back then too.

This was the song that I played most. It’s a really good rock and roll track.

the one that instantly comes to mind from that one was “What if I came knockin'”, but I do remember there were probably five tracks on it that I liked as much.

Man I love this album. John kicked the fiddle to the curb and cranked the amps. Not one dud on this album and If my memory is correct I think this was the last song on album.
I bought this one on CD right away as Get A Leg Up just well…kicks.
Great post and what a cover shot of Cougars wife at the time!

Get A Leg Up is probably the reason I got it…it does have a lot of songs on it. This one blasted out of my car the most of all of them.

I’ve dug John Mellencamp for a long time and own most of his albums, including “Whenever We Wanted.” I still had to look up the specific tune you highlighted! 🙂 The two songs I best remember are “Get A Leg Up” and “Last Chance,” which is probably my favorite from that album.
While over the years I’ve really come to like his more roots rock-oriented sound, I also still like his early more straight rock period. BTW, just on Sunday I watched the old VH1 “Behind the Music” installment on him on YouTube – good stuff!

For some reason Christian “Again Tonight” just spoke to me at that time. It was right before I met my wife so I was out and about.
Get a Leg Up is probably the reason I got the cassette of this. I wore it out in the car.
I like his early stuff also like…Ain’t Even Done With The Night.
