Gonna buy a tank and an aeroplane
When she catches up with me won’t be no time to explain
She thinks I’ve been with another woman and that’s enough
To send her half insane
I was just going to post the lyrics for everyone to read…it explains it all…it’s funny and a great song. A favorite of mine from the Who. It’s a John Entwistle song with his brand of humor on display. He was married to his wife Alison at this time. It’s on the great Who’s Next album and was the B side to Baba O’Riley. It was released in 1971.
John wrote some good songs like Boris The Spider, Success Story, and Trick of the Light but he was in a band with Pete Townshend, and that makes it tough to be heard.
John (The Ox, The Quiet One, Thunderfingers) and Keith Moon made… to me, the best rhythm section in rock and roll.
On the studio version from Who’s Next, Entwistle sings and plays bass, in addition to performing the piano part and all of the brass parts…he’d also played the French horn on earlier Who records…
Run John Run!
My Wife
My life’s
In jeopardy
Murdered in cold blood is what I’m gonna be
I haven’t been home since Friday night and now my wife
Is comin’ after me
Give me police protection
Gonna buy a gun so I can look after number one
Give me a bodyguard —
A black belt judo expert
With a machine gun!
Gonna buy a tank and an aeroplane!
When she catches up with me,
Won’t be no time to explain
She thinks I’ve been with another woman
And that’s enough
To send her half-insane!
Gonna buy a fast car, put on my lead boots, and take a long, long drive
I may end up spendin’ all my money,
But I’ll still be alive!
All I did was have a bit too much to drink
And picked the wrong precinct
Got picked up by the law and now I ain’t got time to think
Gonna buy a tank and an aeroplane!
When she catches up with me,
Won’t be no time to explain
She thinks I’ve been with another woman
And that’s enough
To send her half-insane!
Gonna buy a fast car, put on my lead boots, and take a long, long drive
I may end up spendin’ all my money,
But I’ll still be alive!
And I’m oh, so tired of running
Gonna lay down on the floor
I gotta rest some time
So I can get to run some more
Yeah!
She’s comin’!
She’s comin’!
She’s comin’!
She’s comin’!
She’s comin’!
She’s comin’!
She’s comin’!
She’s comin’!
She’s comin’!
She’s comin’!
Frankly, I had to look this one up, even though I like to say “Who’s Next” is my favorite album by The Who. With tunes like “Baba O’Riley”, “Bargain”, “Behind Blue Eyes” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again” there are so many gems on that album.
As a former hobby bassist seeing John Entwistle with The Who in the early 2000s in Madison Square Garden was amazing experience. He was a beast of a bassist. And unlike Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, Entwistle was nearly motionless while playing all his crazy stuff!
Sadly about six months after that show, he passed away in Vegas where The Who either just had played a show or were about to. I believe it was during the same tour than the New York gig!

I was lucky to see him in 1989…I was a bassist growing up and this man was my goto bass player to listen to. He is on the top of my list of bass players. So quick and his bass lines were rolling.
Moon and him made those songs go.

I got to see him in the late 90s in Raleigh when The Who made a round thru the East Coast. Absolutely amazing to watch.

Sounds about right 😉 Good song! Another case of it being difficult in the shadow of such bright stars.

Ox had some pretty cool tunes. This one is classic and another fav of mine is The Quiet One from Face Dances.
What a powerhouse on the 4 string.

Yes I meant to mention the Quiet One…that is the first Entwistle song I really knew.

I love that version of The Who. I need to get Face Dances on vinyl at some point. First cassette tape of there catalog that I bought back in the early ’80s was F.D.

YEP! Signing ficticious people up and getting 6 more also. That was cool until Mom saw a bill for “John Jones” lol. The party then ended.

I love this one – do many great tracks on Who’s Next. The big arena rock sound really worked for them.

Great live version….think I like his voice more here than on the record. Has a bit more character

Smash your head against the wall…
That was another great john entwistle lyric.
So john is broke. His lawyer writes a letter to Pete asking him if The Who can tour, because john is broke.
So, the broke john gets his hands on some money, and buys some cocaine and hires a hooker.
Pretty normal, right?

Yea broke to him probably isn’t broke to us. He found that way of life in the 70s he loved and would not let it go.
