Bob Seger – You’ll Accomp’ny Me

I bought the Against the Wind album and then a cassette tape from the Great Escape from one of the two locations in Nashville in the 80s. A great second-hand record store which I hope is still open. That is how I could afford to keep my car well stocked.

This song was written by Seger and stuck with me like the rest of the album. Seger liked to split up recording in a studio (Criteria) and recording in Muscle Shoals with some help from them. This one was recorded in Criteria in Miami using some of the Silver Bullet Band and Bill Payne from Little Feat on keyboards.

I’ve been reading critics talking about the album when it was released. They seemed upset that Seger was releasing an album with simple songs. Not every song can be Night Moves. I’ve met some Seger fans who basically stopped liking his music when this album came out. I saw the same thing with some Springsteen fans when Born in the USA was a hit.

I don’t understand that because this is one of my go-to Seger albums although I do like his earlier ones as well. This album was not written with a teenage viewpoint in mind…it was written for 30-40-year-olds viewpoints. Seger was 34 when this one was released. I bought this album when I was around 16 in 1983 but still could relate…and still can... “wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then.”

The album Against The Wind was huge. It is his only number 1 album to date. Fire Lake is the song that made me aware of the album and after that I was hooked. The album peaked at #1 in the Billboard Album Charts, #1 in Canada,  and #26 in the UK in 1980. The reason I say “to date” is because of how the charts are now…it’s not out of the realm of possibility he could get another number 1 from Seger although highly unlikely.

The song peaked at #14 on the Billboard 100 and #8 in Canada in 1980.

  2. Nice live video. I never had any of his albums when they came out, just heard the songs on the radio. I know Dave Marsh was very unhappy with this album, and he was a Seger support we from day 1, being from Detroit.

    1. Yes…Marsh’s review is what I read before I wrote this…I usually agree with Marsh but not on this one. The songs are a little less loud and they are a little more simple.

  5. I was never enough of a fan to but his records, but I never changed the radio station when he came on either. Honestly I’d forgotten about him for about 25 years, until a couple months ago when he popped up on a Spotify recommendation and I took a dive into his catalog. I was shocked by how many songs of his I remembered and liked. I’ve even had ‘Her Strut’ on my workout playlist for the last few weeks! An under rated American artist for sure!

    1. Jay, you know why I like him? His voice…it gets overlooked but songs like Ramblin, Gamblin Man ….really show it off.
      I never went to see him but I did get a few of his records…in the south…we adopted him as our own.

      1. Indeed, he’s got a great voice! There is an undeniable authenticity in his music, something sorely lacking the past couple decades in popular music. I appreciate him more now than in his prime!

      2. You know….I know exactly what you are talking about…I do appreciate him more now. Saying that…radio has to me,,, destroyed a few of his songs…I could go the rest of my life without hearing Old Time Rock and Roll and Turn the Page….but not his fault.

  6. Nice one I’d almost forgotten. ‘Against the Wind’ had some really good tunes on it. Numerically, …8 – rating out of 10 for this song; 7 – number of times all American radio stations put together have played this song since 1981, 6- number of times average ‘classic rock’ station plays ‘Old time Rock & Roll’ per day, every day

    1. Yep! That is one of the problems of modern radio….play a certain song by an artist and NEVER stop playing that one song. Number two we have talked about…no local flavor at all!
      This is a good song…one that has been forgot

  11. My Bob Seger memory always goes back to standing in line at Ticket Master in the late 90s to buy my parents tickets to his Michigan concert. They were so excited with that present. 💕

  12. Bob Seger has written a good deal of great songs. Off “Against the Wind”, I only recalled “Fire Lake”, “Her Strut” and the title cut.

    I still remember listening to “Fire Lake” on the radio back in Germany, where it received plenty of air time. I loved that song and still do. In fact, I believe that was the first song that brought Bob Seger on my radar screen. Not “Old Time Rock & Roll”, “Main Street” or “Turn the Page.” Those came all later for me!

    I just listened to “You’ll Accomp’ny Me” for the first time and like it right away!

    1. Fire Lake is probably my favorite song by him…that and Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man… this song radio wore out at the time but stopped playing it now.

      1. I also love “Turn the Page.” In fact, that one may be my favorite.

        I also dig “Rock & Roll Never Forgets”, “Her Strut” and “Mainstreet.”

        Heck, I can even still listen to “Old Time Rock & Roll,” even though it’s been overexposed!

  15. As you know Max I also have a penchant for Seeger’s music, although you are more familiar with his individual albums where as I only devoured his essential stuff. This is a great song Max. His music always feels so ‘Americana’ and nostalgic. It’s sparse and rich. Cheers.

  16. I see Seeger and John Mellencamp along the same lines. Good radio fodder and some gems in there. Clever working of a long word in there. This one sounds almost like a gospel tune with the backup chorus.
