AC/DC – Who Made Who

Every few years I will watch Maximum Overdrive for a laugh and this is the best thing about it. That movie was directed by a very high Stephen King and it showed.

Stephen King was a huge fan of AC/DC, and when he got to meet them he asked them if they would provide music for this movie. He also offered the band a role in the film, but AC/DC declined, stating they were not actors. The band agreed to do the soundtrack after Stephen King sang “Ain’t No Fun (Waiting Round to Be a Millionaire)” from their 1976 album Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. King sang the entire song from start to finish and the band laughingly agreed that if he was such a fan they would do it for him.

AC/DC performs all but two songs featured in the film, including two unreleased mixes of previously recorded songs, and the entire 1987 album Who Made Who is the soundtrack to this movie. AC/DC wrote this song and various instrumentals, only two of which appear on the album.

The rest of the songs are from previous AC/DC albums. At the time of the release many music stores had no idea the album Who Made Who was a compilation soundtrack for this movie, and many mislabeled the album as an AC/DC greatest hits. Limited pressings of the album did feature the movie’s logo, stating it was the soundtrack to Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive, but this was later removed from future pressings.

The song peaked at #23 on the Billboard 100 and #16 in the UK and #35 in New Zealand in 1986. The album peaked at #33 on the Billboard Album Charts, #12 in Canada, #11 in the UK, and #24 in New Zealand.

  1. Don’t know where I was that day but I don’t know this movie at all! That’s a funny story, hard to imagine the great Stephen King having to ‘beg’ for anything, but I guess at the time he was still an up and comer.

    1. And Mr King was doing a lot of cocaine and if you watch this movie…you will believe it. It’s so bad it’s good….but I loved the music.

  2. Great tune Max and I never really bought soundtracks except for this one and Dazed and Confused. Who Made Who I originally bought on cassette tape for the walkman back in 86. I upgraded to a vinyl copy a few years back …lol Great pick for a Thursday Sir!

    1. Thanks man…the song was a hell of a lot better than the movie…I like how they sounded the same no matter what time period. No 80s production with these guys.

    1. Now it’s a B movie through and through…the only one King directed and he was doing large amounts of cocaine and it shows.

  4. I was a S. King fan back around then but never read this book and never saw the movie (mind you I read perhaps,15-20 of his books but probably only saw four or five movie adaptations). I remember this song though,one of the few by AC-DC that got fairly regular airplay on ordinary rock stations back then. By that time I’d long passed by my phase of liking them, but this song actually I thought wasn’t bad at all.

    1. I like the way they play 3 chord songs over and over and make them sound different. I liked that they sounded more timeless than other bands…just a rock and roll feel with guitars. Those records would have worked in the 70s or 90s.

  6. I was never a fan. When “Back in Black” came out, I came home from work to a 12 year old boy playing it at wall-shaking volume every day. He would then put on headphones and I’d be treated to him singing “You shook me all night long”, with him having no clue how loud he was. I forced myself to listen to this;) Still not a fan.

    1. They don’t change…or rely on any big production…I like them because they are like a garage rock band that never ends.
      Yea Back in Black was way overplayed…and annoying if heard the way you did.

  8. This was a pretty nice collection of songs, I was just the right age, about 9 I think, to get it and get into the band before getting their proper albums. That movie though, wow that was something. Been a dog’s age since I’ve watched it.
