It’s hard to believe this was recorded at the beginning of the Beggars Banquet album. It sounded like it belonged in 1967 than in 1968…the two years in music were drastically different.
This song was the B side to Jumping Jack Flash. The Stones made a video of it and it’s probably my favorite video they ever made. It was shot in Black and White and Color and showed the Stones in a horror/sci fi setting acting as if they are guarding a road…prepared not to let anyone pass. It feels like Children of the Damned meets a little of Lord of the Flies.
The song was never released on a studio Stones album except for compilations. I usually don’t say this but the video really helps this song…it’s a chill about this video.
In the 1960s The Stones and Beatles had power… Beatles toyed with the idea of doing Lord of the Rings and The Beatles signed a petition for Mick Jagger to play “Alex” in A Clockwork Orange…this is before Kubrick was involved.
Child Of The Moon
The wind blows rain into my face
The sun glows at the end of the highway
Child of the moon, rub your rainy eyes
Oh, child of the moon
Give me a wide-awake crescent-shaped smile
She shivers, by the light she is hidden
She flickers like a lamp lady vision
Child of the moon, rub your rainy eyes
Child of the moon
Give me a wide-awake crescent-shaped smile
The first car on the foggy road riding
The last star for my lady is pining
Oh, child of the moon, bid the sun arise
Oh, child of the moon
Give me a misty day, pearly gray, silver, silky faced
Wide-awake crescent-shaped smile
This is great. I don’t even know when I last heard this song. I agree the video helps it. Actually, I can’t say for sure that I’ve heard it before. It sounds similar to Rain by The Beatles, so I might be confusing the two.

I bought the Jumping Jack Flash single…I bought a lot of old singles come to think of it…I flipped it of course.

Wow, I never knew this video existed. Amazing to see Brian.

It’s not shown much at all….and it’s a very cool look into this period.

Is there any chance that this was written about Keith’s daughter Amanda Jane Moon DeWolf? This song sounds real similar to something else, but I can’t place it.

I don’t know…that was Moon’s daughter…I’ve never heard that before if they did. Moon knew the Stones of course…that would be interesting if they did.

I’m really looking forward it…I think we will have one more unheard track.

I’d never heard this before – very cool. And that video/film seems rather ahead of its time, especially for a B-side.

That video is something… it’s simple but effective. I would think it was written the year before…it’s nothing like the Beggars Banquet songs.

You’re right, the video and the song fit like a hand in a glove. Good tune!

Really good b-side, right?

I’ve never heard this. I like it and I was just thinking that they were way ahead of their time with the video. Imagine if MTV existed in the late 60s…

The video is great for a B side. It’s the best one they ever did. Their Start Me Up is one of the worse ones I’ve seen…it’s lazy as hell lol.

Well…considering that MTV launched on August 1, 1981 and this was released August 14, 1981, they probably did throw it together just to get it on the air.

I think they wanted it to look cheap…it probably fit their image of “we don’t care”…
It could have been though

Both are equally possible, knowing them.
