On Sundays, I am going to start posting a good album cut.
When I think of forgotten great album cuts…this one is one of the first songs that come to mind. If you haven’t heard it give it a try. The song has a good riff starting out and the arrangement of the melody is a little different than some of their previous songs. I credit that to new guitarist Steve Gaines… Gaines and Van Zant wrote this song.
Give this song a try…The song takes a while to get going but the melody, guitar work, and the bass are great in this one.
Steve joined the band as a guitarist in 1976. Gaines had an immediate impact, writing or co-writing four of the eight songs on Street Survivors, which was released three days before the group’s plane crashed in Mississippi, killing Gaines, his sister Cassie (a backup singer with the group) and Van Zant.
It is my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song hands down. The band never played this live…the original or the new edition.
Street Survivors peaked at #5 in the Billboard Album Charts in 1977.
I Never Dreamed
My daddy told me always be strong son
Don’t you ever cry
You find the pretty girls, and then you love them
And then you say goodbye
I never dreamed that you would leave me
But now you’re gone
I never dreamed that I would miss you
Woman won’t you come back home
I never dreamed that you could hurt me
And leave me blue
I’ve had a thousand, maybe more
But never one like you
I never dreamed I could feel so empty
But now I’m down
I never dreamed that I would beg you
But woman I need you now
It seems to me, I took your love for granted
It feels to me, this time I was wrong, so wrong
Oh Lord, how I feel so lonely
I said woman, won’t you come back home
I tried to do what my daddy taught me,
But I think he knew
Someday I would find
One woman like you
I never dreamed it could feel so good Lord
That two could be one
I never knew about sweet love
So woman won’t you come back home
Oh baby won’t you come back home
Sometimes all you need is a few bars to know you like a tune – āI Never Dreamed,ā which I had to look up, is one of them!
For the longest time, I only knew Skynyrd because of āSweet Home Alabama.ā That was the one they always played on the radio in Germany. And while itās been perhaps a bit overdone, itās just a great song!
I think it was their 1988 live album āSouthern by the Grace of God,ā which my sister brought me as a souvenir from a U.S. trip, which brought the band more on my radar screen.
Iām glad I got to see them a couple of years ago during their farewell tour. Great show – I posted about it at the time.

Good tune. It sounds like it’s going to be just a musical number which it could have been as Ronnie doesn’t kick in till well over a minute in. Cool stuff man.. thanks

A new one to me. Quite good guitar but definitely distinctive LS sound. Odd that they never played it live – is it a superstition of theirs or just not a track they liked?

I don’t know…it’s a sophisticated number. Van Zant grounds it with his voice…many of their fans were pissed because they didn’t play it…well with the Tribute band they are now… No one knows why.

I can see why you like this so much…

It does have a nice melody. The new member Gaines wrote the melody…it was more advanced than some of their other music. Thanks for listening John. Van Zant really grounds the song also.

Good one! I didn’t know it at all – only knew their “Sweet Alabama”.

Hey Bruce… I wanted to tell you something. I hope I wasnāt a jerk yesterday and pushed myself too hard. I started to think about it this morning. If I was I do want to apologize for that.
Iād been messing with my son and I was in a good mood… but again if I was a jerk…Iām sorry.

Well I kinda felt like I hijacked that thread but I do appreciate what you said!
I think of you the same way Bruce and again I appreciate it.
What conversation? Consider it resting with Jimmy Hoffa.

This is new to me, but I really only know their big hits and I have never listened to all that many of their songs. This song has a softer sound then their usual tunes.

Good song, new one on me. The song is particularly poignant in light of the crash š¦

I’m really self conscious about posting southern rock…heck I did 3 of them today. Some people think every southern person much love it and I ran away from it as a teenager…stuck with British Rock….but I do like some of it…these bands were really good.

Why limit your choices, sorry you felt self-conscious because they are music from the south. Dang, you’re excluding so much good music that way!

I know…I did distance myself for a long time…I feel closer to it now…
Oh… there is one post I want you to see. You know I don’t push my stuff but I want to see what you think. I forget if you ever saw it or not…Citizen Kane.

I don’t think I’ve seen it, BUT! you did convince me to watch the movie, which I did probably 6 months ago. How do I get to it? Will you send me the link please?

You wrote a quality review for it, Max. You should write movie reviews more often. Maybe a weekly feature?

That’s a thought I never thought of. I’ve certainly watched enough to do it.
If I do it will be in the format I just used. I’m not good in plot detail.
Thanks for reading.

You’re welcome, and I like your format for the review. It tells what makes it special in the context of cinema. I bet Bailey might be willing to be a guest reviewer on your blog also, considering that is his field of interest. Just sayin….

Thanks Lisa…I’m going to get him to rate his favorite A24 movies…he loves that film company.

I always liked this one Max. Thanks for the reminder. Just a laid back cool tune. Guitar picks it up at the end. It works.
