Yet another hit off of Born in the USA. It took me a little longer to get into this one. This was intially my least favorite song on the Born in the USA album. It grew on me because of the guitar.
Springsteen wrote this for Donna Summer, but decided to keep it for himself after recording the demo. A fan of the disco diva, Springsteen gave her a song called “Protection.”
Cover Me would have fit Donna Summer perfectly. The song peaked at #7 in the Billboard 100, #16 in the UK, #12 in Canada, and #7 in New Zealand in 1984.
Arthur Brown did a remix of Cover Me and Bruce liked it so much that he started to adapt parts of it live. This version peaked at #11 in the Billboard Dance/Club Charts in 1984.
The Arthur Baker Remix
Cover Me
The times are tough now, just getting tougher
This whole world is rough, it’s just getting rougher
Cover me, come on baby, cover me
Well I’m looking for a lover who will come on in and cover me
Now promise me baby you won’t let them find us
Hold me in your arms, let’s let our love blind us
Cover me, shut the door and cover me
I’m looking for a lover who will come on in and cover me
Outside’s the rain, the driving snow
I can hear the wild wind blowing
Turn out the light, bolt the door
I ain’t going out there no more
This whole world is out there just trying to score
I’ve seen enough I don’t wanna see any more,
Cover me, come on in and cover me
I’m looking for a lover who will come on in and cover me
Outside’s the rain, the driving snow
I can hear the wild wind blowing
Turn out the light, bolt the door
I ain’t going out there no more
This whole world is out there just trying to score
I’ve seen enough I ain’t gonna see any more,
Cover me, wrap you arms around and cover me
Well I’m looking for a lover who will come on in and cover me
Ah looking for a lover who will come on in and cover me
Yeah I’m looking for a lover who will come on in and cover me
Ah, man, good times!
Like for many other folks, “Born in the USA” brought Springsteen on my radar screen. “Cover Me” was one of the hits off that album you could frequently hear on the radio in Germany, along with “Born in the USA”, “Dancing in the Dark”, “I’m on Fire” and “Bobbie Jean”. Of course, there was also “Glory Days”
It’s just amazing how many hits that one album generated. The only other ’80s records I recall that produced so many hits are “Reckless” by Bryan Adams and I suppose Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.

It was left over from what I had before…That guitar is really cool in it. Not much info on that song though.
I remember that time well… Thriller, Purple Rain, and Born in the USA ruled the airwaves.

One more album that had a ton of hits was Hysteria which if you look at the tracklisting the first 6 Songs were all singles! (all of Side A) Plus add another single on Side 2 for a total of 7 singles off of one album.

You are totally right. In the mid eighties they also were part of those giant albums. Good days Deke.

Slippery When Wet and especially Hysteria are Greatest Hits Records in 2020! That’s crazy!

It is…the mid eighties were just full of massive popular albums. I’m glad we lived through it. My son Bailey who just turned 20 is buying vinyl now and he says…hey dad it’s not right that we don’t have albums like this anymore…

You have raised your son well Max!
That’s awesome he can apprciate a full album instead of a single track in this day and age.
That is what I call Great Parenting!

I try man…I didn’t force it on him and I believe that is why it stuck. A full album is a lost art.

That’s awesome and the main thing is he’s discovering records.

Great track. Actually anything off of this record is classic. But I hear ya Max it sometimes takes a song or two to grow on you over time or it won’t! lol
Sometimes those deep tracks end up being the best one’s

Oh Yeah Max I am. I love those tracks that an artist or band stuffs on the back end of an album and they end up being my fav.

This too is my least favourite song from the record, but it’s still a pretty darn good song.

There’s an odd-one-out feel about the track. Different feel and different sound. Always dug it though – one of my favs in fact.

Another excellent song off that album. About the middle of the list, ir I ranked the songs on it in order of my favorites.
Bryan Adams ‘Reckless’ was another album of that era that sold in the multi-millions and had a surprising number of hit songs on it. And Huey Lewis’ ‘Sports’.

I forgot about Sports. I’m glad we lived through that…it was pretty incredible with the popular albums. I don’t think any other decade had so many with that many hits.
