Love Affair – Everlasting Love

I was looking through UK #1’s Blog posts and I found this song from 1967. If you haven’t visited his site…do it. He lists every number 1 in the UK starting in the 50s and now he has just started the 1970s. I’ve found a lot of songs I didn’t know like this one.

I’ve always known the Carl Carlton version released in 1974 and it is a great version but I really like this one. This version from 1967 sounds fresh…especially the bass. The only member of the group who performed on it was their 16-year-old vocalist Steve Ellis. The rest of the band were replaced in the studio by studio musicians.

Love affair went onto achieve five more UK Top 20 hits on which the group did get to perform.

Everlasting Love peaked at #1 in the UK in 1967.

Steve Ellis: “The general opinion seemed to be that I should do it with an orchestra and then give it a Phil Spector-type production. Obviously, I felt odd without the band being in the studio but it was for the good of all involved. Two takes and it was done. The band were not too concerned about this approach to things.”

Everlasting Love

Hearts gone astray, deep in hurt when they go
I went away, just when you, you need me so
You won’t regret, I come back beggin’ you
Won’t you forget, welcome love we once knew

Open up your eyes then you realize
Here I stand with my everlasting love
Need you by my side, girl to be my bride
You’ll never be denied, everlasting love

From the very start, open up your heart
Feel that you’re part of everlasting love

Need a love to last forever
Need a love to last forever

Where life really flows, no one really knows
Till someone’s there to show the way to lasting love
[Lyrics from: https:/lyrics.az/love-affair/the-everlasting-love-affair/everlasting-love.html]
Like the sun it shines, endlessly it shines
You always will be mine, if eternal love

Whenever love went wrong, ours would still be strong
We’d have our very own everlasting love

Need a love to last forever
Need a love to last forever

Open up your eyes then you realize
Here I stand with my everlasting love
Need you by my side, girl to be my bride
You’ll never be denied, everlasting love

From the very start, open up your heart
Be a lasting part of everlasting love
Whenever love went wrong, ours would still be strong
We’ll have our very own everlasting love

    1. I really like this version…I didn’t know it existed… it sounds so vibrant. Their top ten is quite different than ours…usually.

      1. Watching this video…I don’t why I think this…maybe it’s the short hair but it looks like you could have plucked him out of the 90s or now and sent him back.

  1. Not too bad. Like you, I know the ’74 version from Carl Carlton , which is pretty good. this one’s ok too. Like the record sleeve, “Gone are the songs of yesterday”. LOL, so too gone are the light effects of yesterday- that’s some fancy video, LOL.

    1. It’s a strange video…It is interesting to see the number 1s in the UK compared to here. A different spin on some of the same songs. I like this one a lot because it’s more of a beat group approach…the bass sounds fresh in it.
I told someone else…maybe it’s the short hair but the singer seems very modern now.

      1. I think themost surprising thing about the UK charts are the few artists who had so many big hits there and none, or very few here like Rex Smith and Cliff richard.

  2. Been listening to the different versions…Robert Knight, the one above, Rex Smith (complete 80s cheese…headbands and everything), Gloria Estefan, Town Criers (awful), Sandra (which sounds like a Madonna impersonation even though she is German)… This Love Affair version is pretty good but, my fave is still Carl Carlton (1974). I had NO idea there were that many covers (Call Me is still high with 20+ covers). I do really like Steve Ellis’ voice, tho…

    1. This one sounds modern to me. I wonder who the lady is in the video with glasses that is acting a bit like Charlie Chaplin..she had to have a purpose.

      1. From what I remember I went to IMDB and looked up the video and then found a female name. I do believe I found her. That was back in January. That is the kind of stuff I end up doing lol…I believe you do the same.

      3. No lol…No this happens around 3 times a year. Not a damn thing I can do. I walk around like Groucho Marx hunched over.
I pulled my back out in the 80s and since then it happens.

    1. I like that one also. I’d never heard this one before I read his blog in January…Ellis seems modern to me for some reason.
BTW I’m checking out Josh Rouse tonight.

  3. I think the first version of that tune I ever heard was by Sandra in the ’80s – not exactly my favorite. Then I heard the Carl Carlton take – much better, in my opinion. I don’t believe I had heard Love Affair’s version before. I agree this one is pretty good and the best out of the three.

    1. I never heard this version until January. I really liked it. This guy is only 16 here. I thought the singer seemed modern
