Right Down The Line is a beautiful song that gets lost in the large shadow cast by the preceding single “Baker Street.” It’s a rare love song that works without coming off as overly sentimental. I’m not saying it’s better than Baker Street… but it is an underappreciated gem.
This was the follow-up single to the great song Baker Street in 1978. The song peaked at #12 in the Billboard 100, #1 US Billboard Adult Contemporary and #5 in Canada. The song came off his great City to City album which peaked at #1 on the Billboard Album Chart.
Right Down The Line
You know I need your love
You’ve got that hold over me
Long as I’ve got your love
You know that I’ll never leave
When I wanted you to share my life
I had no doubt in my mind
And it’s been you woman
Right down the line
I know how much I lean on you
Only you can see
The changes that I’ve been through
Have left a mark on me
You’ve been as constant as a Northern Star
The brightest light that shines
It’s been you, woman, right down the line
I just want to say this is my way
Of tellin’ you everything
I could never say before
Yeah this is my way of tellin’ you
That every day I’m lovin’ you so much more
‘Cause you believed in me through my darkest night
Put somethin’ better inside of me
You brought me into the light
Threw away all those crazy dreams
I put them all behind
And it was you woman
Right down the line
I just want to say this is my way of tellin’ you everything
I could never say before
Yeah this is my way of tellin’ you
Everything I could never say before
Yeah this is my way of tellin’ you
That every day I’m lovin’ you so much more
If I should doubt myself, if I’m losing ground
I won’t turn to someone else
They’d only let me down
When I wanted you to share my life
I had no doubt in my mind
And it’s been you woman
Right down the line

excellent track. Actually I recall the whole LP was quite good – I had that one and Night Owls on vinyl back in the day. A guy who could’ve been a bigger star if he had wanted to “play the music biz game”

I tried to find your post last night and link it but I didn’t have a lot of time…. I know you covered it right?

No worries! I think I’ve done posts on ‘Baker St.’ & the ‘City to City’ album in past…I need to try to make the search feature more obvious on mine. I can find it on PC (which I use to compose & post) but difficult to locate on phone.

“Baker Street” was such a tour de force, it almost wasn’t fair to any song that was the encore. This is a great one, though.

Gerry Rafferty has a soothing voice and I am thinking about writing about the Stealers Wheel song Stuck in the Middle with You.

Not a hit in the UK, which was criminal! Great single and should have been huge as well. I think it got edged out by the more upbeat UK New Wave music scene at the time…

I loved Gerry Rafferty/Stealers Wheel. He was really messed up. He didn’t do well with fame and, that alcoholism…I know what it is like to live with that. I watch it, daily.

Baker Street was overplayed on radio and still is. This song I like better.
