My first favorite Beatle song. The first Beatle album I was exposed to was the American album “Meet the Beatles” and I loved it. This song jumped out at me. Loved Johns voice, melody and the guitar riff. I also like the call and answer of the “yeah”. John had the chorus written and sat down with Paul in 1963 to finish it off. With the intention of writing a follow up single to the yet unreleased “She Loves You,” they put together verses and bridges in an unusual configuration with the already written chorus.
The song is a rocker and catchy but never released as a single.
It Won’t Be Long
It won’t be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won’t be long yeh, till I belong to youEvery night when everybody has fun
Here am I sitting all on my ownIt won’t be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won’t be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won’t be long yeh, till I belong to youSince you left me, I’m so alone
Now you’re coming, you’re coming on home
I’ll be good like I know I should
You’re coming home, you’re coming home
Every night the tears come down from my eyes
Every day I’ve done nothing but cry
It won’t be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won’t be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won’t be long yeh, till I belong to you
Since you left me, I’m so alone
Now you’re coming, you’re coming on home
I’ll be good like I know I should
You’re coming home, you’re coming home
So every day we’ll be happy I know
Now I know that you won’t leave me no more
It won’t be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won’t be long yeh, yeh
It won’t be long yeh, till I belong to you, woo
Love the syncopated bvs…. Remind me of Christmas from Tommy

Isn’t it brilliant! I’m playing it right now. Everytime I hear tommy…I always end up on ebay trying to pick up a decent SG with p90s…for me that’s that sound of the album! Amazing. I remember Pete townsend didn’t like the sound of the guitars. Some of them went straight into the desk I think

It is brilliant. Now you may beat me up over this but isn’t the album tinny to you? Compare it to Who’s Next… It doesn’t have the depth or sonic quality of other albums around that time. That doesn’t mean I don’t like it but the production to me was a little thin.
Oh yes…I’ve never had an SG…always wanted one…with p90s you could rule the world.

I think I agree with that.. It has a brittle sound for sure but on vinyl it’s ok.. The remastered version makes the highhats cut a bit hard. Who’s next is level up for sure

Moon was heard complaining his drums sounded like bisquit tins…it worked though…still considered one of the great albums.
I like Christmas, Sally Simpson and many of the others.

And a white boiler suite just kidding… You would have that late sixties Who sound…hard to beat.

There’s a YouTube video I’ll link to later. Just an sg into a normal fender amp. Spooky how similar it sounds to Tommy…

This song now makes me think of the movie, Across the Universe. I used to consider it a fun song, but now there’s more–the story from the movie attached to it, which is nice.

Yes it was in it I forgot… for me it was my introduction to the Beatles and really my taste in music.

This song would have been a career achievement for many groups- with The Beatles- just another great song. I don’t see why it couldn’t have been a hit single had they chosen it to be. Just no room for releasing it as a single.

Yes it would have been a hit. Funny I searched youtube for it and found Julian doing it live in the 80s when he was big…it worked well for him.

I think this was one of the first songs Neil Young played in public

This is one of my top ten Beatles songs! I had the great pleasure of singing lead on this with my band Merseyside. So glad to have discovered your blog.

Thank you! I’m on yours now. It’s the song that got me hooked into a lifetime of reading about and listening to them.
I’ve played in bands since the 80s…unfortunately I’ve never tried this one. Thanks for commenting.
