I’ve never had recipe’s on my blog but since it’s near Christmas I thought I would stick with my usual theme and post this dessert that is associated with the 1970s.
This recipe is coming to you straight from Kraft.

Well, I checked my reader a couple of hours too late. I was trying to decide on a salad to make earlier this afternoon. I ended up doing carrot cake. (That’s a vegetable too, right? :p ) I’ve never made Watergate Salad, but I’ve enjoyed it at plenty of potlucks over the years. Thanks for reminding me of it.

I thought it would be fun and sorta fit my theme! This is about as political as I get lol…

That’s just the right amount of political, I say. 🙂

My sweetie (and her Mom originally) do something similar but with cherry pie filling as well as the pineapple, and they just call it “Pink Stuff”. Walnuts optional. Haven’t heard it called Watergate salad, wonder what the origin of that is?

I think some editor of a newspaper saw the recipe and just renamed it…Kraft picked up on it in the seventies… I should have added that!

My paternal grandmother used to make that for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I hated it. It’s nasty.
I don’t like marshmallows or jello or cool whip. They are all too thin to chew and too thick to swallow.

I would much rather have plain fruit salad. This looks really good though. I’ve had it just a few times…I don’t like the marshmallows…

Oh this post brings back memories! My mom, aunts, grandmas-all made this salad for various and sundry family get togethers and church potlucks. I actually made it this summer for a Memorial Day meal and my youngest, who is 15, almost ate the whole salad by himself, he loved it so much! I do remember my mom asking my Grandma why the salad was called Watergate, and an aunt quipped, “Because it’s full of nuts!”-referring to the political Watergate scandal of the 1970s.
