A Complete Unknown… private movie showing

My son Bailey saw a private screening of the new movie about Bob Dylan called A Complete Unknown along with the star of the movie there at the theater as well. His name is Timothée Chalamet and Bob Dylan said he did a great job portraying him.

Bailey did say they got the era down really well. Everything looked right for that time period compared to real footage he had seen. He loves the film. Bailey is probably a bigger Dylan fan than I am and that is saying a lot.

I got to see Timothée Chalamet from shorter than arm’s reach. Here are a couple of photos I was lucky enough to get with my phone.

I got to see the film early due to a record store I follow on Instagram promoting free tickets.

A Complete Unknown follows Bob Dylan from 1961 to 1965 as he becomes a folk legend to a rock n roll rebel. The film really lets you see how Dylan progresses with his fame alongside his own character wanting to do what Dylan wants to do. You also get insight into other characters like Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Woodie Guthrie, and Sylvie Russo in their relationship with Dylan.

I was really pleased with how this film paced itself. It wasn’t trying to make a buck out of you. It was trying to make you feel moved. There are times you laugh at a clever witty comment Dylan makes to feeling annoyed like he does with what people want him to be… instead of what he wants to be. The entire film moves you towards the Newport folk music festival in 1965. It was so cathartic with what followed ( I can’t say anymore from here).  I really loved every second of it and cannot wait to see it again. It is now one of my favorite films.

    1. I’m looking forward to it after Bailey was excited about it…and then I saw the previews…they look great….not just for Dylan but that time period.

  10. Good job Bailey! I’d say he’s lucky, but really hey, he’s put the work in in that field studying and now teaching films so who better to go to a show like that. I imagine a lot more opportunities like that will be coming for him down the road.
    As for the movie, sounds interesting – more so if you’re a huge Bob D fan of course – and it struck me as odd, now that I think of it, that there hasn’t been a big Hollywood box office blockbuster about him before ala ‘Rocketman’ for Elton John or ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ for Freddie Mercury.

    1. Just hold on…cause EVERYONE will get a movie before long. I think this one will appeal to the casual fans as well. It’s a period in time…that people find interesting. Right before the Beatles and to around 1965…we probably will see it on Christmas.

  11. A nice review and I can’t wait to see the film. I am a Dylan fan from way back. My 28-year-old grandson looks like Bob, hair and all and plays guitar like Bob. That was a pivotal time in American music and good to know our children appreciate it.

      1. Momo and me are headed to our comfy lounger theater on Christmas also. We don’t do the theater thing much, but this film is already an earworm so we gots to go. I’ve been listening to my Dylan vinyl albums for a few weeks now and catching up on Amazon and Spotify. I noticed that he and John Prine are similar in their music and humor and Dylan said he was a Prine fan. Two greats of the acoustic music world.

        You are right…Prine and him are very similiar…both are in that same world.

  12. ‘m so looking forward to seeing this too……I keep wondering why I’m not a huge fan of the Elton John nor the Queen bio pics, I’m guessing for Dylan, it’s when I was still, I knew who he was, and had my parents buy me a copy of one of his greatest hits albums, but most of his history was when I hadn’t gotten even near my teens….

    1. I started to get into him in my early teens in the early 80s…I ended up seeing him 8 times so far…but yea…since this movie is only about a 3-4 year window…it should have the facts right or most of them…it sure looks good.

  13. What the heck!?!? “You dropped a bomb on me” here, Max. Bailey is blessed! Cannot even imagine being that lucky. Not sure I knew Bailey was a big Dylan fan. He has you to thank for his love of good music. I think Chalamet was on Colbert last night but haven’t watched it yet. I would love to see Ken Burns do a series on Dylan.

    1. Oh yes…he is a HUGE Dylan and Beatles fan… I would like Burns to do one on The Beatles as well as Dylan.
      He said Chalamet was really cool there…and he talked a lot.

  19. I have been a fan of Timothee Chalamet since I saw his work in the stunning Dune movies. I put those movies up there in SW and LOTR league of cinematic excellence as far as Sci-Fi movies go. Bailey must have been beside himself to have been within arms reach of one of the greatest young actors of the current era.

    Given Bailey was so smitten about the movie; even a bigger Dylan fan than you, has got me even more anticipative about its release here. Our family will see this together. Cheers and give thanks to Bailey for giving us a spectacular glimpse into this marvellous encounter and viewing he had.

      1. We are very disappointed in just learning we couldn’t find a session for the movie here in December or January. Perhaps it will come out here closer to awards season. Normally we get the new movies at the same time as the US, but it doesn’t appear so in this case.

      2. I hope it does well. I have high expectations with this. Just those scenes I saw on the previews were incredible. Bob COULD be an asshole….it looks like it’s honest.

      3. If I was rich I’d fly us to the US just to see the launch. I agree the previews/sneak peaks look really good, especially the one you posted here of Baez and Dylan singing BITW on the bed. Very realistic especially Bob’s knack for giving it to Baez and as you said sometimes being an asshole. Also Dylan’s manager was all over this movie. Haha.
