This past weekend I posted a Beat Farmers song…well actually two and the album. If you would have scrolled down to the last track on that album…this is it. On Nashville’s station WKDF a disc jockey would play this song quite a lot in the mornings and afternoons.
My best friend growing up is named Ron. Ron played guitar in our band and we absolutely loved this song. We would go around and just break out singing this song over and over again. I even had a Kazoo I would take around with me.
If you are feeling low…this should pick you right up or send you even further down! The song is on the Tales Of The New West album.

…

Tight Country/R’n’B revival band, but never so good songwriters as Dave Alvin or the Long Ryders and never so crazy as Green on Red, but tight, comfortable and fat.

Yep! Everyone who listened to rock/alternative radio in the 80s might well know this song, but it seemed like it was always something the ‘zany’ morning crews would play for a laugh. I didn’t know who it was and honestly would have guessed it was that station’s (CFNY Toronto was where I heard it) DJs and maybe producers just joking around themselves. As such, my experience with it – a fun song people like but might not have advanced their career very much since their name wasn’t synonymous with it and if it was, people probably wouldn’t take them seriously at all.
There was another song like it, humourous/dumb ditty they played quite a bit around the same time which revolved around a bear … every situation ,”twas a bear,,,’ ,Never have been able to relocate that or remember who did it.

When CB mentioned Beat Farmers…something in the back of my mind knew them…but I didn’t place it with them right away…then it hit me…it was them!
Their work as a whole was very Americana… and that word in the mid 80s was not something that sold well… much to my displeasure… which reminds me…I need to get another Kazoo.

Amazing. I always thought this was a throw away on the album and it’s the one people know. We were talking about Tom Jones, Dick does a medley with the Pleasure Barons (Alvin, Nixon). He was a certified nut job. I liked him.
