I watched this tonight…oh how I miss Rodney Dangerfield. This movie was released in 1986 and while it’s not in the class of Caddyshack or Animal House…it’s a fun movie to pass the time.
Rodney plays a very rich owner (Thorton Melon) of Tall and Fat shops and has a son (Jason Melon) going to college played by Keith Gordon. Thorton catches his wife cheating…many times and they get a divorce. Jason lies to his dad about being on the swim team and in reality, is about to quit college. Thorton decides to be the oldest freshman on campus and joins his son in college.
Three interesting appearances in this movie…A young Robert Downey Jr…. he plays the eccentric best friend of Jason, Sam Kinison who plays a very loud Professor…and Kurt Vonnegut who plays himself.
This movie is a fun little comedy and Dangerfield gets off some really good one-liners:
With the shape my body is in, I could donate it to science fiction.
Bring a pitcher of beer every seven minutes until someone passes out, then bring one every ten minutes.
No kids? Well, get yourself some. Take it all. [hands officer more cash] And just remember, the best thing about kids… is making them!
I don’t know. I can’t figure women out. Today, they’re… independent. They only think about themselves. Why, during sex, Vanessa – she used to scream out her own name!
Probably the most famous scene of the movie.
A babysitting standard for me! Dangerfield’s one-liners still ring true, and the 80s atmosphere is so surreal, it makes me want to enjoy it again with my wiser brain, haha!

It’s a fun movie. You see why now I don’t review too many movies lol. It’s not in the classic comedy movies tier like Caddyshack but it’s a fun one because of Dangerfield.

Definitely one of my all time favorite movies. Sam Kinison had a great role playing Professor Terguson and I love that line where he tells that girl that she was too busy listening to the goddamn Beatle albums!

I loved that line…I think this small role boosted his career. Dangerfield was great to young comedians.

Rodney makes anything that much better. Someone else plays his part, this goes right to video.

You are right…he elevates any part just by being himself.

Thank you I forgot about Easy Money…he was a lot of fun…those one liners.

Yes, his one-liners and the ones he set up for the others. The first few minutes of Easy Money had my sides hurting from laughing.

I may be reviewing that movie soon. Of course my reviews are more reminders than reviews. He stole some of the show in Caddyshack. Him and Ted Knight were great playing against each other.

Yes, he and Ted in Caddyshack were perfectly paired! I’ll look forward to the Easy Money post when you do it.

Rodney made some stinkers, but this isn’t one of them. The cast of this movie is just great. I love Kellerman in this one.
The Triple Lindy dive cracks me up every time I watch it.
Every time he calls Ned Beatty “Dean Martin” I laugh like hell!
Burt Young is an underrated actor in my opinion.

Love Burt Young… he is a tough but lovable guy.
Keith Gordon…I can’t help but always think of Christine when I see him.
Without Rodney this movie wouldn’t be as remembered…he elevates it.

Good reminder of what a great comedy it’s supposed to be. I watched many years ago and I plan to watch it soon. Thanks! This is therapy for one’s life!

It gets you away from life for a little while and that is a good thing.

Haven’t seen this one or Easy Money yet, but I love Rodney Dangerfield. He plays what may be his only sinister role in “Natural Born Killers”. He was brilliant in it!

Yes he did….what a different role for him but he fit the bill perfectly.
