Jimi Hendrix – Angel

This is a beautiful spacey song by Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix started working on this in 1967 along with “Little Wing,” which was similar. He gave up on it, but pulled it out and recorded it on July 23, 1970 – just a few months before his death on September 18, 1970. The song takes you on a ride with it.

It was originally released on his 1971 posthumous album The Cry of Love. It was written by Hendrix and recorded at Electric Lady Studios with drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox. Rod Stewart later covered this song…of course, he has covered about every song.

The song was inspired by a dream Hendrix had about his mother Lucille.

  4. Lovely song. Gorgeous. Here, Hendrix shows off his technical expertise, which is interesting and illuminating because it shows that he was an educated guitarist. So many of his fans act as though he was a savant and that he just played from his gut. He was a musical genius. He was visceral and expert. That is what sets him apart from so many of his wondrous imitators including, even, the great Stevie Ray Vaughn.

    1. The flourishes he adds to chords…totally sets his songs apart. His vision for writing songs went beyond his era… He gets stuck with the psychedelic tag but he was much more than that…I personally don’t think anyone has caught up with him.
