Santana – I’m Winning

This is a well-crafted song by Santana. It was written by Russ Ballard. I’m Winning didn’t have a Latin style like many of his seventies songs…it was more pop/rock and very catchy. It peaked at #17 in the Billboard 100 in 1981. Scotish vocalist Alex Ligertwood sang this song after Greg Walker left the band a little earlier.

It was released off the album Zebop! Ligertwood also sang on the hit Hold On the next year.

I’m Winning

One day I was on the ground
When I needed a hand
Then it couldn’t be found
I was so far down that I couldn’t get up
You know and one day I was one of life’s losers
Even my friends were my accusers
In my head I lost before I begun
I had a dream but it turned to dust
And what I thought was love
That must have been lust
I was living in style
When the walls fell in
And when I played my hand
I looked like a joker
Turn around fate must have woke her
Cause lady luck she was waiting outside the door
I’m winning
I’m winning
I’m winning
I’m winning and I don’t intend on losing again
Too bad it belonged to me
It was the wrong time and not meant to be
It took a long time and I’m new born now
I can see the day that I bleed for
If it’s agreed that there’s a need
To play the game and to win again

  1. That was a pretty good song. I have nothing against Santana but he’s one of those artists if a song is on the radio I listen to it but I’ve never owned a Santana record or even thought about buying one.

    1. I liked this song because it was pop/rock… I get what you are saying… Black Magic Woman and songs in that vein never interested me much.
Saying all of that… I did have a great 3 week period in the early 90s where I saw Clapton, Santanta and Robin Trower live…great guitar players.

Off topic…just finished season 1 last night of the Sopranos… brilliant. The mom is a piece of work.

      2. It was a shame when Nancy Marchand passed away and her character was gone from the show. She was excellent.

  2. Love this song! That and “Hold On” (which was written and first recorded by Ian Thomas, a great Toronto singer who’s the brother of actor Dave thomas) are my two favorites by him. My sweetie loves his early Mexican sounding stuff, which is OK, and lots seem to gravitate towards his comeback album with Rob thomas etc, which was also OK but this under-rated period of his career appeals to me. He’s a very interesting guy to see interviewed- kind of “out there” but seems a good guy
