Favorite Rock Lyrics 3

I again took all of your suggestions and now we have a post that we made together. Thank you for all of the suggestions. I usually don’t repeat artists on one post but we had 3 Neil Young requests…I used two and the other one will be on the next.

  1. Another good list! Kudos on the Roddy Frame, that’s going a little ways out of the mainstream. The Beatles one you mention is great like so many of theirs, only yesterday I really looked at the lyrics to ‘In My Life’ carefully for the first time & realized how great they are . And ‘Come Dancing’… yes! To me one of the most perfect pop songs of the early-’80s starting with the lyrics.

    1. Mr Davies never lets you down with lyrics. I’ve mentioned his hair raisingly droll ‘Full Moon’ before, but almost any Kinks song has lyrics that are able to be taken in different subtle ways.

    2. You are right about Come Dancing…. A great pop song that got a lot of new fans on board. I love these lyrics… it’s fun to see how diverse you can get with these.

  2. My favorite of these here would be Me and Bobby McGee I guess. And the Peter Paul and Mary is closer to my style. I don’t really like lyrics that are too literal or too preachy. I like the kind that don’t make too much sense if you just read them or listen too closely, but you got to get the meaning from the music rather than from what they’re saying. Know what I mean? That’s the kind I like.

When I do them though…I look for a cool lyric.

  3. Great stuff, Max. And thanks for including what I believe was “my” proposition by Neil Young: “You are like a hurricane there’s calm in your eye and I’m getting’ blown away”.

Speaking of Neil, did you see he’s now out with a Harvest 50th anniversary edition and a documentary titled “Harvest Time”? It’s nearly impossible to keep up with the man. The documentary is only available in select movie theaters Dec 1 & 4. I just got a ticket for tomorrow afternoon at a theater in my area – admittedly, a total impulse purchase!

With all that said, my favorite lyrics in your post are the first from “Me And Bobby McGee”.

    1. Oh wow I would like to see that documentary. He is releasing everything that is for sure. I guess this will continue because he has the rest of the 70s to go and then a few decades more.

  4. I’m glad you picked Thrasher – that’s an amazing lyric the whole way through. I don’t always think of Young as a great lyricist, but he’s amazing there.

Old Man has some great lines too:
    Love lost, such a cost
Give me things that don’t get lost
Like a coin that won’t get tossed
    Rolling home to you

  5. “There’s a hole in daddy’s arm where all the money goes…” John Prine. You could do a whole post just from his lines. “You may see me tonight with an illegal smile. It don’t cost very much and it lasts a long while.” “Your flag decal won’t get you into heaven anymore. It’s already overcrowded from your dirty little war.” I’ll stop there.
