Droogs – Ahead Of My Time

The lyrics won’t make you mistake these guys for Bob Dylan but the guitar action is pretty cool in this one.

Several years before it became fashionable…the Droogs were playing what would later be called “garage revival”. They started playing together as pre-teens in 1966 and began issuing singles in the early to mid seventies.

Ahead of My Time was released in 1974. They missed out on the garage band sixties and they were ahead of the curve of the 60s garage band revival in the late 70’s.

They started to release albums in the mid-eighties and were part of the Paisley Underground Scene. They released 8 albums between 1984 to 2017.

The Droogs just released an album in 2017  called Young Gun and are still together doing their thing.

Ahead Of My Time

Hey babe, this must be your lucky day babe
I wanna kiss you if I may babe
Don’t care what people have to say babe

I’ve got to love you, the only way that I can
So please don’t misunderstand
They’ll tell you that I’m not your kind
But I’m just ahead of my time.

In your neighborhood, got a reputation that’s none too good.
For knowing things no young man should
I know baby, you would if you could

I’ve got to love you, the only way that I can
So please don’t me be your man
They’ll tell you true love’s hard to find
But I’m just ahead of my time.
I’m just ahead of my time.
I’m just ahead of my time.

We’re just ahead of our time.
We’re just ahead of our time.
We’re just ahead of our time.

Hey babe, this must be your lucky day babe
I wanna kiss you if I may babe
Don’t care what people have to say babe

I’ve got to love you, all the way babe

  1. There was a new record maybe three years back… I should look up the details… that highlighted the scene, if I remember right, there were 4 groups, highlighted by the Bangles, and they each did a song originally done by one of the others. Might be well-worth looking into.
More power to the Droogs! Like Primitive radio Gods I wrote about a few days ago and so many others, one has to admire a band that keeps on keeping on over 30 years with no or limited success. Really doing it for the fun of making music.

    1. I’m going to do a post on the Bangles soon from that period…you covered one of the songs they did….yes that record does sound good.

The Droogs make their money from Europe where they have a fan base…it’s so cool that they still keep going…they are older than most…being from the early 70s.

    2. I’m writing that Bangles post and I found this… I think this is it.

Rain Parade covered this on a 2018 compilation called 3 x 4, where four Paisley Underground groups – Rain Parade, Bangles, The Dream Syndicate and The Three O’Clock – cover each others’ songs.

  2. I remember them from college radio days. I liked them but I don’t own any of their stuff. There’s a lot going on at one time in this song. I realize that that’s an component of garage rock/pre-punk/punk, but, for whatever reason, this one’s a little too busy for me.

      1. Well…I saw the thing when I was 15 and I haven’t been the same person since. My mom didn’t know of course but yea…it’s different!

      2. It’s so violent…NOT cartoon violence but real violence…it does have an interesting view in it about reforming someone. I had no business watching it when I was 15…I made Bailey wait a long time. Even he was absolutely shocked…and he was 17 (yea I should have waited longer)…he had watched many modern movies….nothing compared to that.

      3. See, that’s what I don’t understand. If it is so violent, how can it be a favorite movie of so many people? And why are people drawn to it? No need to answer, I’m just pondering something that doesn’t make sense to me.
