I started this post and it’s still hard to believe Ric Okasek is gone…him and The Cars left behind some great songs and history.
The band’s guitarist Elliot Easton was one of the most underrated guitarists of his generation. The guy played perfect pop/rock/country guitar fills and solos.
This song like many other of their best known songs was on their debut album The Cars. To these ears it hast to be one of the best debut albums by a pop/rock band. The album was released on June 6, 1978.
The album featured 3 charting songs Let The Good Times Roll, My Best Friend’s Girl, and Just What I Needed. It also contained songs that would remain staples on rock radio such as Bye, Bye, Love and You’re All I’ve Got Tonight.
The Cars sold one million copies by the end of 1978 and remained on the charts for nearly three years. It only peaked at number 18, Billboard ranked it number 4 on their “Top Albums of the Year” countdown. Critically, the album has been labeled “a genuine rock masterpiece”.
In the next decade the Cars would climb higher in the charts with singles and albums before they disbanded in the late eighties.
You’re All I’ve Got Tonight
I don’t care if you hurt me some more
I don’t care if you even the score
You can knock me and I don’t care
You can mock me and I don’t care
You can rock me just about anywhere
It’s alright
‘Cause you’re all I’ve got tonight
You’re all I’ve got tonight
You’re all I’ve got tonight
I need you tonight
I need you tonight
I don’t care if you use me again
I don’t care if you abuse me again
You can make me I don’t care
You can fake me I don’t care
You can love me just about anywhere
It’s alright
Cause you’re all I’ve got tonight
You’re all I’ve got tonight
You’re all I’ve got tonight
I need you tonight
Said I need you tonight
I don’t want to feel sorry for you
You don’t have to make believe it’s you
You can pump me I don’t care
You can bump me I don’t care
You can love me just about anywhere
It’s alright
You’re all I’ve got tonight
You’re all I’ve got tonight
You’re all I’ve got tonight
I need you tonight
Said I need you tonight
You’re all I’ve got tonight
You’re all I’ve got tonight
You’re all I’ve got tonight
I need you tonight
I need you tonight
I need you tonight
This may be the most chauvinistic song ever written as the guy only wants the girl because he doesn’t have anyone else. He feels that he is superior to her and that she is not worthy to be with him and it is like he is doing her a favor by being with her.

Would rock music even exist if not for chauvinism? The Stones pretty much built their brand on it.

You are right Stephen…Under My Thumb is the granddad of all of those songs….then you have Some Girls…and the list goes on.

one of their better album cuts, and good enough to have been a single…with the radio play it’s gotten over the years, it’s surprising perhaps that it wasn’t

If they would have released this album as the second one…and were known more…I think more would have been hits….and the hits would have been larger.

You’re right, Max, that guitar sounds mighty sweet on the song. I had this album once upon a time. I remember I drove to Killeen, TX with my cousin the summer the singles hit.

I love ’em. Such a great song from a great album. Can I just say, I really hated Shake It Up.

That wasn’t my favorite by them either…so I do agree.

It just sounded so commercial and overproduced to me

I was going to say contrived… really the same thing.

This album is basically a greatest hits album and it’s a debut

Funny you say that … I was listening to my iPod and You Might Think came on and I thought the same thing. He’s been gone awhile, too.

I know man…it’s been a while now and it doesn’t seem right. He was older than his peers I believe.

It’s kind of amazing. Every time The Cars come up, I feel like I know next to nothing about this band until I listen to their music and recognize how many of their songs I know because they were on the radio all the time!

Just get their first album and you will have a sort of greatest hits…

I can’t believe Orr has been gone 20 years. I always preferred his voice but. this one is a good one.
Good ole Ric disinherited Paulina and two of his sons. What a charmer.

Yea I didn’t get that…that was not too long before he died also.

They split in May 2018 and were still divorcing. They were still sharing a townhouse when she found him. He “claimed” she had abandoned him. If they were still in the same household and she was there when he passed, she didn’t abandon him.

I thought all of it was odd

I’m wondering what or how two of the six of his sons pissed him off.

I know I saw that. I hate when that happens…it’s always in the Will… “and so and so knows why he or she isn’t getting anything”
