Jimi Hendrix – Foxy Lady

This is one of the most remembered songs from Jimi. According to Hendrix biographer Harry Shapiro, the song  was probably inspired by Heather Taylor, who eventually married Roger Daltrey, the lead singer for The Who.

Kathy Etchingham, Jimi’s girlfriend at the time, also claimed to be one of many inspirations for “Foxy Lady.” I’m sure there are/were a lot of claims.

Hendrix recorded this on December 13, 1966. That same day, he made his first TV appearance on the British show Ready Steady Go. The Jimi Hendrix Experience had been together only 2 months at that point, but things moved very quickly. Three days later, their first single, “Hey Joe” was released.

Rolling Stone magazine placed the song at number 153 on its list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

The song was on the Are You Experienced album released in 1967. It peaked at #5 in the Billboard Album Charts, #15 in Canada and #2 in the UK

Foxy Lady peaked at #67 in the Billboard 100.

Hendrix opened for The Monkees on their 1967 tour. When he played this, the young girls who came for The Monkees and had no interest in Hendrix shouted “Davy!” when Hendrix sang “Lady,” resulting in “Foxy Davy,” and turning it into a tribute to their idol, Monkees lead singer Davy Jones.

This was featured in the movie Wayne’s World. It is used in a scene where Garth (Dana Carvey), sings it while thinking about his dream woman, played by Donna Dixon.

In the booklet for the Experience Hendrix CD, Hendrix was quoted as saying this was the only happy song he had ever written. He said that he usually just doesn’t feel happy when writing songs. 

The title of this song has two alternate spellings: “Foxey Lady” (for release in America) and “Foxy Lady” (for release in the UK).

  2. When I turned 50 back in 2017 one my blog buddies bought me an album that was 50 years old and it was this one ☝️!
    A pretty damn cool rock record to come out the year I was born (1967)

    1. That album along with Cream’s at the time was probably the birth of hard rock and then heavy metal…other bands would do a hard rock song like The Who or the Beatles but not a complete album full of them.

      A great gift! No one is/was like Hendrix.

  3. I knew about Hendrix opening up for the Monkeys when they played Shea Stadium and Jimi was still basically unknown in the United States. They were in the middle of their successful 1966-1968 TV series run and this was a very unexpected pairing.

  5. This song always takes me back to my teenage parties in the basement of my parents home and a certain ‘feel’ to the period. I love this song with its sort of dirty-sludgy slide.

    When I listen to Hendrix, I either listen to it with the sound turned down or when other half is listening to or watching something with a loud volume in another room, otherwise he comes in, picks up my (very under-used as I’ve forgotten how to play it) guitar and plays along. Y’know, having someone playing along when I want to listen to the song itself, sorta does my head in. Even worse is when he has to go to his own room and turn on one of his electrics, crank up the amp and belt it out from down the corridor… !

    I need some good headphones!

    1. Headphones are the only way I listen to music anymore. It’s the only way I can get in to it and hear everything.
      I love to hear bass an that is the best way.

  9. Hey I was out for a run yesterday and Daltrey was telling the story of how Heather turned up to a bar in Soho while he was reading a book…according to Daltrey, Hendrix had been putting on the moves but to no avail. What a tune this is!

  11. I would’ve given anything to see Hendrix and The Monkees on the same bill. I love the Monkees as I used to watch the re-runs on TV in the mid-70’s. The very first album I ever bought was from a TV commercial for their greatest hits album…I still have it. Sorry, this is a Hendrix post. Great song and massive talent…there covered it.

    1. No need to be sorry. The Monkees were my first band I loved! They are a big reason I ended up playing music… When I was 7 I watched the re-runs…I talked my mom into getting me a Michael Nesmith stocking cap…then when I was 8 I found the Beatles and was lost for life.
