Uriah Heep – Traveler in Time/Easy Livin’

This post is a small double shot…I included the A-side Easy Livin’ but the one I like the most is the B side Traveler In Time. This wasn’t the original single…it was released a little later.

Sometimes I like going off the beaten path and I’m in the woods with this one. Traveler In Time, I picked up from the BBC TV show Life On Mars from 2006. I’m not a huge fan of progressive rock but the song has a good musical hook and the singer is unreal.

Traveler In Time and Easy Livin’ was on the album Demons and Wizards released in 1971. The album made it to #23 in the Billboard Album Chart, #22 in Canada, and #20 in the UK.

Easy Livin’ peaked at #39 in the Billboard 100 and #27 in Canada in 1972.

Easy Livin’ was the only Uriah Heep song to crack the Top 40 in the United States. It was an even bigger hit in the Netherlands and Finland, two countries that had a large Uriah Heep fanbase.

  1. This is probably one of the few Uriah Heep songs that I remember hearing. Uriah Heep is a fictional character created by Charles Dickens in his 1850 novel David Copperfield. I don’t think that I have ever heard The Wizard before.

      1. Maybe in a similar vein…have you watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood? It’s long, so I’ve broken it up into three sessions. It’s seriously captivating for the late-60s vibe. I’m past halfway through it and have no idea what’s coming next.

      2. Yes I have 4 or 5 times. Bailey and I watched it originally and he has wore it out.
        I liked it…he loved it. All I’ll say is they did a good job on the look of that movie.

      3. Haha, I’m not a bit surprised that it’s been a regular feature at your place. It’s that kind of experience. I don’t think I’d even care about the story. As far as I’m concerned, they can just drive the cars and wear the clothes, listen to the music, and go from place to place for a couple of hours.

  3. I don’t think I remember that one at all, though I do remember seeing their name on the charts when I was little, probably in ’72, maybe ’73. Such a weird name it kind of sticks with you!

    1. That is what I remember about them. Livin’ Easy was a decent hit…but I like the other one better. I’m trying to hit bands that I never posted about before.

  4. I know Uriah Heep with their sometimes extremely high vocals may be a bit of an acquired taste, but I dig some of their music, especially the early stuff.

    Their 1973 “Uriah Heep Live” album is pretty cool – essentially a greatest hits of their first five albums. I also like “Salisbury,” their second studio release from Feb 1971 – “Bird of Prey” is a little weird but nice rocker. “Lady in Black” was a huge hit in Germany in the ’70s.

    1. I do like some of their songs. His voice was like Ian Gillian on helium…but it was great.

      I heard that Time Traveller on that show…and dude I highly recommend Life On Mars…the BBC program

      1. Ha, Ian Gillan on helium, that’s a good one! “Weirdly catchy” is how I would characterize their music.

        Have you heard “Bird of Prey”? It’s a great and furious rocker with a great riff – and of course weird singing!😆

  6. It’s rare but always nice to see a post about Uriah Heep. The Wizard has always been a favorite tune from this album. For many years, it was an anthem song for me … pure poetry.

    1. I caught that one song from that show and through the years I’ve heard some…unlike some other prog bands…they have some nice melodies.

      1. I think it was Ken Hensley who wrote the best melodies with the group. Many of his lyrics were deep and poetic too.

      3. They have a large catalog from 1969 into the turn of the century, ranging from prog-rock, heavy metal, ballads, and even a country sound at times. They were very much into doing their own music instead of trying to make the charts.
