Songs That Reference Steve McQueen: Sheryl Crow – Steve McQueen

Well, this one was a no brainer. This one wraps up this short series. The song was off of the C’mon, C’mon album which peaked at #2 in 2002.

In the music video for the song, Sheryl Crow recreates the car chase scene from McQueen’s movie “Bullitt” and the motorcycle chase from his film “The Great Escape.”

Sheryl won a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for this song.

Steve McQueen

Well I went to bed in Memphis
And I woke up in Hollywood
I got a quarter in my pocket
And I’d call you if I could
But I don’t know why
I gotta fly

I want to rock and roll this party
I still want to have some fun
I want to leave you feeling breathless
Show you how the west was won
But I gotta fly
I gotta fly

Like Steve McQueen
All I need’s a fast machine
And I’m gonna make it all right
Like Steve McQueen
Underneath your radar screen
You’ll never catch me tonight

I ain’t takin’ shit off no one
Baby that was yesterday
I’m an all American rebel
Making my big getaway
Yeah you know it’s time
I gotta fly

Like Steve McQueen
All I need’s a fast machine
And I’m gonna make it all right
Like Steve McQueen
Underneath your radar screen
You’ll never catch me tonight

Like Steve McQueen
Like Steve McQueen

We got rock stars in the White House
All our pop stars look like porn
All my heroes hit the highway
They don’t hang out here no more

You can try me on my cell phone
You can page me all night long
But you won’t catch this free bird
I’ll already be long gone

Like Steve McQueen
All we need’s a fast machine
And we’re gonna make it all right
Like Steve McQueen
Underneath your radar screen
You’ll never catch us tonight

Like Steve McQueen
All we need’s a fast machine
And we’re gonna make it all right
Like Steve McQueen
Underneath your radar screen
You’ll never catch me tonight

    1. This one led to me watching Papillon again and that led to the posts…so this one started it.
      I agree…it’s a cool song that fits it’s subject.

  1. I don’t really like CCM band The Newsboys, but their 1995 song Take Me To Your Leader has some creative lyrics that reference McQueen in the opening verse. Also. prefab Sprout’s excellent 1985 album was named for McQueen but had to be renamed Two Wheels Good for the US market.

    1. I differ with you there lol! No I get what you are saying. Someone who looks like this normally doesn’t play guitar driven rock and roll. She could have been a model no doubt…glad she wasn’t though.

Stevie Nicks is very pretty but her looks goes with her music a little more.

  2. I’m impressed. It doesn’t suck. “Soak Up The Sun” made me want to barf, so…maybe there is some hope.

I just learned the other day that she is only about 5′ 3″…3 1/2″. I thought she was taller but, she is a little thing. Ditto Stevie Nicks at 5′ 1 1/2″.

    1. I thought she was much taller because she looks like she has long legs.
I just wish she would have been around in the 80s…she beats the hell out of Madonna even on her bad stuff…to me anyway

      1. Now, that I agree with. Madonna was just TOO MUCH. Too much makeup, too much trashy clothes, too much mouth… She STILL has too much mouth. Though misguided, Sheryl seems to care about the environment which, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. The “global warming” nonsense gets on my f***ing nerves. I just learned that she lives in West Nashville.

      2. Yea Madonna I never had any love for. She probably drinks the blood of virgins and flys to her concerts with her leather wings…Yea I don’t like her.
Hmmm…I’ll have to keep my eyes open for her.
