Playing For Change, a global nonprofit which helps provide music education to young people around the world has just released a collaborative version of Robbie Robertson‘s “The Weight,” the classic song recorded by The Band in 1968 for their debut album, Music From Big Pink

A most excellent collaborative effort of a classic song! What an eclectic selection of instruments and musical talents.

The Weight ranks #41 in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Robertson said he was inspired to write the song after watching director Luis Bunuel’s films about “the impossibility of sainthood”, but the line “pulled into Nazareth”, refers to Nazareth, Pennsylvania, home of the Martin Guitar factory.

description would suggest one of those things that make you think “good cause but gonna be horrible”. But it actually sounds quite good. Cool find, Max

This was really cool. The Weight was a great choice. I didn’t realize they had done other songs too. I’ll be looking them up.

I just started to look them up…I didn’t know either. It’s a great idea and it was great to see Ringo. I’ve found Imagine, Gimme Shelter and others.

It was wonderful wasn’t it? I kept going to Youtube and Robbie kept popping up…I’m thinking what is Ringo doing with Robbie and I would close it…last night I finally listened to it…it was great.
They have others also…like Imagine and many others.
Yes we can.

Damn! Man I enjoyed that. Ringo’s drumming was a highlight…but the global aspect is brilliant. Enjoyed the sitar…who would have known. And that Italian slide player’s guitar was something special. Playing some more tracks from the channel now
