Hong Kong Phooey

If you were a kid in the mid-seventies…on Saturday morning you were happily blitzed by a morning of cartoons. When I did a post on Underdog last weekend I was asked about Hong Kong Phooey…he was voiced by the great Scatman Caruthers. It was produced by Hanna-Barbera in 1974 for ABC. Around this time Martial Arts were extremely popular and this cartoon played on that.

Hong Kong Phooey’s secret identity is that of Penrod “Penry” Pooch the Police janitor. Penry works with Sgt. Flint and police dispatcher Rosemary. Hong Kong Phooey thinks his martial arts skills catch the bad guys…but it’s usually always Spot the Cat.

To my surprise…Hanna-Barbera only made 16 episodes and kept running them forever. I watched this in 1974 through 1976 as it was part of the magical seventies Saturday morning programming.

  3. I do’t think I ever saw the cartoon but it does ring a bell- must’ve seen commercials for it or something back in the day. They don’t make cartoons like that (any of the 60s-70s ones) anymore!

  4. As soon as I opened up my WordPress feed and saw the picture of Hong Kong Phooey, I immediately hoped that it was your post!

    I have to say, this is probably my all-time favorite cartoon! I thought it was played perfectly by Scatman Crothers!

    Hanna Barbera has this out on a DVD collection that contains every episode. I made sure to pick it up and have already shared it with my kids!

    This is yet another example of great cartoon theme songs! Kudos on yet another great post!

    1. Scatman Crothers did such a good job. Anything he is great. His voice is so recognizable.

      Someone asked about Hong Kong Phooey when I did Underdog so I promised lol. You should do one about him…I thought when I was doing it…dang I’m not the one that should be doing this lol.

      I can’t believe they only made 16! I guess they were spread out so far that us as kids didn’t know any difference.

      1. Scatman was just so cool! I remember his guest appearance on Sanford and Son – one of my favorite episodes! He was good in the shining too.

        It’s been awhile since I posted on cartoons. Last time was when I did theme songs early on in this blog.

        Off topic: I was looking at your page and noticed you have a nice index on it. I guess I need to figure out how to do that. LOL.

      2. Man I can walk you through it…. The main reason I did it other than people finding my stuff is so I won’t double post a song. The other things like Sky Lab and things like that I know I did…but I’ve done so many songs that I couldn’t keep it straight.

        If you want to do it I’ll help you. It took a while for me to figure it out

        I don’t post as many songs as you do, but I also want to keep track of that and movies too.

      4. I get more hits on my archive than I do my current posts. That list down the side helped but I can tell the difference since I got the index.

        My problem…you will have the same problem…there are so many categories because we post different things.

        I would love to pass the knowledge that I learned…The hardest thing will be you listing all and linking them. Tell me when you are ready.

      5. Yeah, I agree. I think I want to go through and try to decide how to organize them. Music and Movies is easy. Some of the personal stuff, I guess I can make category for that too.

        Will definitely find a way to hook up and figure it out, bro! Still want to get with you on music. LOL. May need to take a vacation …

  6. Only 16!! I shouldnt be surprised, I remember enjoying it in late 1974 after Kung Fu Fighting highlighted the 1973 boom for Bruce Lee/ the US show Kung Fu and general cult for things Kung Fu – and then I dont recall watching it again except in re-runs.
