Thinking of Peter Tork who passed away Thursday at 77. This song would play over the closing credits of their TV show. Peter Tork (Peter Halsten Thorkelson) co-wrote the song with Joey Richards. “For Pete’s Sake” kicked off side two of the Monkees’ third album, 1967’s Headquarters. The song was not released as a single but the album Headquarters (the Monkees played their instruments on this one) and eventually peaked at #1 in the Billboard 100 until Sgt Pepper took over the spot.
The song has a garage band sound and lyrically it’s very 1967…and that is a good thing.
For Pete’s Sake
Love is understanding,
Don’t you know that this is true.
Love is understanding,
It’s in everything we do.
In this generation,
In this lovin’ time,
In this generation,
We will make the world shine.
We were born to love one another
This is something we all need.
We were born to love one another
We must be what we’re goin’ to be
And what we have to be is free.
In this generation,
In this lovin’ time,
In this generation,
We will make the world shine.
We were born to love one another
This is something we all need.
We were born to love one another
We must be what we’re goin’ to be
And what we have to be is free.
Love is undertanding, we gotta be free
Love is undertanding, we gotta be free
[Repeat and adlib]
Great tribute to a true musician.

He seemed to have quite a good sense of humor; saw a couple of interview clips from recent years and he always seemed upbeat and jovial. He was my sweetie’s fave in that band apparently

He was a very good musician also… him and Michael were really good and playing in folk type bands.
He did have a great sense of humor…he was the first to quit.

I remember loving this song at the end, where it showed their faces. It doesn’t seem like there was a mean bone in any of them. Sorry to hear he’s passed on.

This is such a great tribute.
I remember just like it was yesterday watching the Monkees. I loved the show, their songs and all four of the guys.
My favorite song of theirs is “Last Train to Clarksville.”
He will be missed!

Yes they are the ones that got me into music when I was around 5 or so. It looked so much fun playing music….from there I found the Beatles and I was lost forever.

I had a few issues with my site earlier as I completed the post I wrote, I had to try about three times to enter the photo, and it never would allow me to make the post a sticky. Not sure what’s going on with it.

I will take a look at the settings.
I changed my theme, so I wonder could that have caused some issues? I will check.

I probably read about that at the time, but didn’t remember it. The news this week was a total shock.
