Great melody in this song. The Moody Blues are described sometimes as a progressive band but unlike many progressive bands, they kept a good pop/rock sensibility. I bought the album Every Good Boy Deserves Favour when I heard this song. The song peaked at #23 in the Billboard 100 in 1971.
From Songfacts.
This song was a bonus track to the album, yet it turned out to be by far its most successful song. Its music and lyrics are among the intense songs from this group. The song seems to be about a man worrying about both his marriage/relationship and the world around him.
The name of the album, “Every Good Boy Deserves Favour,” is taken from a mnemonic device used to aid in learning to read music. It corresponds to the notes on the lines in the treble clef, from bottom to top: E, G, B, D, F. There is also a stage play by Tom Stoppard of the same name, which was first performed in 1977.
Story in Your Eyes
I’ve been thinking about our fortune
And I’ve decided that we’re really not to blame
For the love that’s deep inside us now, is still the same
And the sound we make together
Is the music to the story in your eyes
It’s been shining down upon you now, I realize
Listen to the tide slowly turning
Wash all our heartaches away
We are part of the fire that is burning
And from the ashes we can build another day
But I’m frightened for your children
And the life that we are living is in vain
And the sunshine we’ve been waiting for
Will turn to rain
When the final line is over
And it’s certain that the curtain’s gonna fall
I can hide inside your sweet sweet love
Forever more
Listen to the tide slowly turning
Wash all our heartaches away
We are part of the fire that is burning
And from the ashes we can build another day
But I’m frightened for your children
And the life that we are living is in vain
And the sunshine we’ve been waiting for
Will turn to rain
I saw these guys live a few years back, in front of a 60-piece orchestra. They’re fatter than they used to be (as if I’m not) and they don’t hit the high notes as they once did but damn, that was a lot of fun.

Yes that description fits me as well lol. They must love what they do because at that age it is a lot of work. They probably do have money with as many hits as they have.
They came to the Ryan and I missed it…I believe it was the same tour.

One of my fave songs from that time. For some reason, I think of it as a 60s song. I’ve always hated that cover with the eyes. I don’t think it represents what is in the song at all.

Yea it didn’t fit it. That is the best part about doing these songs…finding all of the old 45 art work. I do like their album art covers…always imaginative.

I agree about their album covers. I think they cared a lot about the covers. I wonder if they had any say at all in that 45 cover.

With them I would think so… I found two different covers but the other was a copy of an earlier one with the titles switched.
On the album I use to stare at the “light” from the crystal…or whatever it was

My favorite Moody Blues song of that era… right up there with “The Voice” (which actually doesn’t sound all THAT different) as their best in my opinion. Like you said, they kept a good sense of pop melody to go with the symphonic elements they loved and that makes them one of the best of that genre

They blended it really well. Personally I never considered them Progressive. I think of Yes and ELP… The Moodys were a great rock band to me… adventurious but a great pop/rock band.

Good group, good song, I was lucky enough to pick up the LP awhile back. The album cover fits the mood of the Moody Blues…
