Badfinger – Baby Blue

Baby Blue never gets old to me…it is the perfect powerpop song. It has the right combination of crunch and pop with an irresistible guitar riff. I love the way they used the song in Breaking Bad that fit the scene perfectly. The song peaked at #14 in the Billboard 100 in 1972. The “Dixie” in the song was Pete Ham’s ex-girlfriend, Dixie Armstrong.

The song came off of the album “Straight Up” that also contained the hit “Day After Day” and it is considered by many their best album. I’m happy that Breaking Bad showcased this song so that another generation knows the song and hopefully that will lead more to learn about Badfinger.

  1. Dixie was from my town–Wichita. They met when the band played here. I loved this song from the first listen, even before knowing the ‘local’ connection. Imo, it is the complete package of nice catchy tune and well-written lyrics that tell a story people can connect with.

    1. This band as you can tell by the blog always captured my imagination. This song to me perfectly captured everything perfect.

      I wonder if she does interviews or talks about Pete? From what I read he was such a nice and sensitive guy…That is cool about your local connection.

      4. Of the documentries I’ve seen of them I don’t believe I ever saw her interviewed. I’m sure she wanted privacy and I can’t blame her.

  2. Yeah, what’s not to like about Badfinger. They really exemplify the perfect craftsmanship of songwriting, musicianship, production and all around artistry. Not my favorite Badfinger song, but a great Badfinger song, nonetheless.

    1. They really did. I want to feature some of the non hits soon. “Take It All” and Midnight Caller… Pete was a top flight songwriter and performer.

      1. I know I can go out onto the internet and find out what happened to Badfinger and why they didn’t become superstars like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, but can you give me a brief synopsis?

      2. Terrible crooked manager who really took advantage of them. Pete couldn’t pay rent at the end.
        The manager kept telling them he was investing their money from touring and the multi million dollar contract they signed. Just a loathsome person…his name was Stan Polley. He had it funneled into his own company.
        Warner Brothers took their album off of the shelves because of missing money from their account that Polley took…the album then died with their career…
        Pete was so nice and sensitive he would not believe the guy was a crook…until the end. He thought of people around the band as family.
        Pete hung himself in 1975 as did Tom Evans the bass player 8 years later.
        Of course it was a lot more to it…but it is truly heartbreaking.

      10. Oh…look up Pete Hams suicide note. The manager was Stan Polley. Pete thought the best of people and didn’t realize it until the end.

    1. Yea I think it hurt them more in the long run because of the comparison and they were in a box so to speak. They turned into a jamming band near the end… but yea it looks like they would have helped a little if they knew
