The Faces – Stay With Me

This song was written by Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart that became the Faces biggest hit. the song peaked at #17 in the Billboard 100, #6 in the UK and #4 in Canada in 1972. I’ve always liked the sound of the song.

This band was formed from the Small Faces when Steve Mariott quit and Ron Wood and Rod Stewart joined.

from Songfacts.

The song was the first and biggest American hit for the Faces, although Rod Stewart scored his massive solo hit “Maggie May” four months before “Stay With Me” was released in November 1971. In “Maggie,” which is based on a true story, Stewart is the object of sexual conquest. Psychologists could have a lot to say about this one!

This has been covered by Elf featuring Ronnie James Dio (1972), Elkie Brooks (1978), Rod Stewart with Kim Carnes and Tina Turner (1982), Rod Stewart himself (1993), Manic Street Preachers with Bernard Butler on guitar during their 1994 European tour and Def Leppard (August 5, 2002). Plus as a B-Side on the “Do Ya” single by McFly.

Stay With Me

In the morning
Don’t say you love me
‘Cause I’ll only kick you out of the door

I know your name is Rita
‘Cause your perfume smelling sweeter
Since when I saw you down on the floor
guitar

Won’t need to much persuading
I don’t mean to sound degrading
But with a face like that
You got nothing to laugh about

Red lips hair and fingernails
I hear your a mean old Jezebel
Lets go up stairs and read my tarot cards

Stay with me
Stay with me
For tonight you better stay with me

Stay with me
Stay with me
For tonight you better stay with me

So in the morning
Please don’t say you love me
‘Cause you know I’ll only kick you out the door

Yea I’ll pay your cab fare home
You can even use my best cologne
Just don’t be here in the morning when I wake up

Stay with me
Stay with me
‘Cause tonight you better stay with me
Sit down, get up, get down

Stay with me
Stay with me
Cause tonight your going stay with me
Hey, whats your name again
Oh no, get down

  1. Good tune! I could be wrong but seems to me Rod was already well-enough known that Toronto hit radio back then were just listing it as ‘Rod Stewart’ on the charts.rest of band must have loved that if they ever saw it

    1. Yes his solo career was taking off bigger than the Faces…they played his songs and they turned into his backup band really…that couldn’t have went over too well.

    1. I thought it was rather ironic- the way Rod treated women over the years- then the model he was married to- forget her named- dumped him and broke his heart.

      1. Jim Croce quote time, “ain’t that the way they say it goes….” Ironic indeed 🙂 Was it Brigitte Neilson (sp?)? I know he had a thing for skinny blondes. Who was the older woman in Maggie May?
