Derek and The Dominos – Bell Bottom Blues

I like this song just as much as Layla. The song was written by Eric Clapton and Bobby Whitlock. This song and “I Looked Away” are my favorites on the album. This song peaked at only #91 in the Billboard 100 in 1971.

Yet another song that was written about Pattie Boyd.

From the American Blues Scene site

In 1970, Eric Clapton was experiencing emotional anguish at the hands of lover Pattie Boyd. His romantic agony inspired an entire album worth of songs, “Bell Bottom Blues” being one of them. In Eric Clapton: The Autobiography, he recounts writing the song for Boyd after she asked him to get her a pair of bell-bottom jeans while he visited the US.

Bell Bottom Blues

Bell bottom blues, you made me cry
I don’t want to lose this feeling
And if I could choose a place to die
It would be in your arms

Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you?
Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back?
I’d gladly do it because
I don’t want to fade away
Give me one more day, please
I don’t want to fade away
In your heart I want to stay

It’s all wrong, but it’s all right
The way that you treat me baby
Once I was strong but I lost the fight
You won’t find a better loser

Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you?
Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back?
I’d gladly do it because
I don’t want to fade away
Give me one more day, please
I don’t want to fade away
In your heart I want to stay

Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you?
Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back?
I’d gladly do it ’cause
I don’t want to fade away
Give me one more day, please
I don’t want to fade away
In your heart I want to stay

Bell bottom blues, don’t say goodbye
I’m sure we’re gonna meet again
And if we do, don’t you be surprised
If you find me with another lover

Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you?
Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back?
I’d gladly do it ’cause
I don’t want to fade away
Give me one more day, please
I don’t want to fade away
In your heart I want to stay

I don’t want to fade away
Give me one more day please
I don’t want to fade away
In your heart I want to stay

I don’t want to fade away
Give me one more day please
I don’t want to fade away
In your heart I want to stay

    1. It’s probably because I’m a little burned out on Layla. My favorite part of Layla is the very end with the piano.
Off-topic I was so busy today I didn’t get to check into it but google had a Roberto Clemente theme today… birthday?

      1. It’s weird they would just pick a day out… I’ve looked now and I see no real reason…but I’m glad they honored him regardless.

      2. I guess they tied it in with baseball? it’s really cool you got to see him play… I know a lady from Nicaragua…knows nothing about baseball but knows his name.

      3. One of my best childhood memories is getting to watch him. He was just so dynamic. I have always said if you knew nothing about baseball and was taken to a game- as soon as he walked onto the field he is the guy you’d notice- and you’d have to think this guy is probably pretty good at this game. He is the only player I ever just watched- just watched what he was doing even if he wasn’t involved my eyes would be glued on his movements.

      4. Just watching him on highlights…like I said earlier he was electric. I liked watching his fielding highlights as much or more than his hitting. What an arm that guy had.
I just looked at his last year…he still had good numbers.
You were very fortunate being in Pittsburg during the sixties – seventies…good thing your Dad didn’t decide to move for the sports alone.

      5. Good point- when I think of Clemente I think of him in the field. Of course he was a great hitter-.317 career average etc.. but in the field he was an artist. .. Yes so glad we never moved- I have a feeling if we had- we wouldn’t have been there long-as Detroit economically was already starting to decline. We’d have probably been back in a year. I am sure my mom had a lot to do with us staying. .. yes for the sports alone. It is hard to believe the Lions haven’t at least once WENT to a Super Bowl. How bad is that… good luck tonight with your Dodgers!

      6. I know…no wonder Barry Sanders retired early lol… It’s like they try not to win.
Thanks…if they can take tonight or tomorrow I like their chances.

  1. I don’t like it as much as ‘Layla’…but it’s not far off. An excellent track that should’ve been better received than it was. To me, one of the maybe 5 top clapton tunes. I noticed Rob.clemente theme too, I saw it’s something like Hispanic Heritage Month but you’re probably right it could be the day of his birth. Would’ve liked to see that guy play- from all reports nothing but aces on field and off

    1. Layla is not Stairway to Heaven to me now…I mean that in a good way lol… but I do like this song a lot.

He looks electric in the film clips.

  2. I borrowed the Concert for Bangladesh cd set from my library last week and watched the concert, the documentary, interviews, etc. that were included. The concert was in 1971. I noticed EC was what I will call understated in this concert and there were way too many guitars. He seemed almost awkward on stage, especially when he was playing that large electric acoustic (?). In the documentary it talked about how he almost didn’t make it over and that’s why so many backup guitarists showed up. I can’t help but wonder if his anguish over Patty had something to do with it. Anyone have the scoop?

    1. Some of it was wanting Pattie but also that is about when he started doing various chemicals because of it. He has an addictive personality…at least from what I read. Be it Pattie, heroin, booze, and even fly fishing! Pattie would say he got addicted to fly fishing really bad when they were married… He seems to be doing good now.
Thanks for commenting! I like your blog. I write some songs but they are not the same…your stuff is more complex…it’s really good.

      1. Thanks for shedding light on the situation with EC. And thank you for the kind words on my blog. Bits and pieces of this and that. I like your blog also, as music from the years of my youth is of ongoing interest to me.

  3. Love this song, my Dad would play it over and over again especially when he was drinking. Just recently after getting into the Allman Brothers surprisingly I relistened to this album and it’s very solid. My second favorite track is “Anyday”. Duane Allman’s slide guitar make a huge impact on the record. https://thepopculturallists.com/
