Van Morrison – Brown Eyed Girl

Somehow I didn’t hear this song until I was 18 in 1985. When  I heard it I immediately loved it. One of the most infectious bass lines I’ve ever heard. Van Morrison released this song in 1967 and it peaked at #10 in the Billboard 100.

The song was originally called named “Brown Skinned Girl”. The song was banned by some stations because of the line “Making love in the green grass” in the 3rd verse… and it was edited with “Laughing‚ and a-running” from a line in the 1st verse on the censored version.

This was Van’s first single after leaving “Them”.

It’s a song that I never get tired of hearing. The sound is crystal clear and it made me feel nostalgic at just 18. It’s not Van Morrison’s best song…that would be impossible to pick but it is a great pop song.

Brown Eyed Girl

Hey where did we go
Days when the rains came
Down in the hollow
Playin’ a new game
Laughing and a running hey, hey
Skipping and a jumping
In the misty morning fog with
Our hearts a thumpin’ and you
My brown eyed girl
You’re my brown eyed girl

Whatever happened
To Tuesday and so slow
Going down the old mine
With a transistor radio
Standing in the sunlight laughing
Hiding behind a rainbow’s wall
Slipping and sliding
All along the water fall, with you
My brown eyed girl
You’re my brown eyed girl

Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da
Just like that
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da, la te da

So hard to find my way
Now that I’m all on my own
I saw you just the other day
My how you have grown
Cast my memory back there, Lord
Sometime I’m overcome thinking ’bout
Making love in the green grass
Behind the stadium with you
My brown eyed girl
You’re my brown eyed girl

Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da (lying in the green grass)
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da (bit, bit, bit, bit, bit, bit)
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da (sha la la la la la)
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da

  1. I agree a great song- but it seems to always be the Van song you hear on the radio. One of those songs in my opinion that has been played to death.

    1. It has but for some reason I always enjoy it. Don’t ask me why… for some reason it’s not like Hotel California to me…

off topic and I’ll keep it at this because I want to wait til I finish it… if you don’t mind and ask you a few questions…Gus is dead…that was a great scene. I did like Gus because he was so business like in a world of crazies. I can’t say enough about the show.

      1. A lot of songs are overplayed that I don’t get tired of- I guess what gets me is this is the song they always play of Van’s -I just wish they would play others!……………. Gus was a fascinating character! The all business temperment- the calmness he always had… that death scene is unforgettable. What a show!!

      2. Yes it’s not his best song by any stretch of the imagination… He has more radio friendly songs they don’t wear out like Wild Nights, Blue Money, Domino even Caravan to me is radio friendly.

I want to hit you with a few comments when we are finished…probably late next week or so if you don’t mind. It’s a deep show.

      3. Sure ask away- and enjoy the rest of the series… That was his big hit- I can understand why they play it so often- and it is a great song…The only place on radio I hear different Van songs is on the Celtic Crush I listen to every week. Ironically I was catching up on the last episode just minutes ago–and guess what they played? Brown Eyed Girl!!! That song isn’t played that often on the show- but it was this week!

      4. When I learned that riff on bass back then…I thought I was king of the world.
Not counting satellite shows…college radio stations are the only stations I hear him on…well with the exception of…you guessed it…Brown Eyed Girl.
When I finish it I will…I want to read more about it but if I do it will give more away.

I’ve been reading that Beatlesbooks site… I found it by accident but every song I’ve looked at is really in depth… It’s for diehards like us and it’s great.

      5. I will have to spend more time on that beatles site- haven’t had much spare time the past couple weeks- but I will… .. Brown Eyed Girl is one of those staple 60’s songs- AM or FM fits right into the formats.
