Tommy James and The Shondells – Crimson And Clover

I grew up with this single. The song was a number one hit on the Billboard 100 in 1968. This song separates itself from others… I learned what tremolo was about with this record. After full tremolo on guitar…at, the end of the song, a microphone was plugged into the guitar amp with the tremolo effect on the vocal for good measure.

Good pop song

From Songfacts

Tommy James constructed this slice of psychedelia from his favorite color and his favorite flower. In our interview with Tommy James, he told us: “They were just two of my favorite words that came together. Actually, it was one morning as I was getting up out of bed, and it just came to me, those two words. And it sounded so poetic. I had no idea what it meant, or if it meant anything. They were just two of my favorite words. And Mike Vale and I – bass player – actually wrote another song called ‘Crimson and Clover.’ And it just wasn’t quite there. And I ended up writing ‘Crimson and Clover’ with my drummer, Pete Lucia, who has since passed away.”

Crimson and Clover

Ah, now I don’t hardly know her
But I think I could love her
Crimson and clover

Ah when she comes walking over
Now I’ve been waitin’ to show her
Crimson and clover over and over

Yeah, my, my such a sweet thing
I wanna do everything
What a beautiful feeling
Crimson and clover over and over

Crimson and clover over and over
Crimson and clover over and over
Crimson and clover over and over
Crimson and clover over and over

  1. Yeah. Tommy James was very inventive with production techniques. He doesn’t get the credit he deserves. I think it has a lot to do with his and the Shondells late 60s early 70s costuming and bouffant hairdos. Ludicrous. Hard to take their music seriously. I remember having a couple of their singles–this being one of them–and then seeing how they looked on a K-tel record commercial. I was totally turned off.
Love the Joan Jett cover too. Solid.

    1. My sister had the single so when I think of the song I think of that orange and yellow cover spinning.

They did have a bunch of singles hit… K-Tel…that brings back memories.

John Fogerty would use the tremelo to much greater use… I do like the Joan Jett version…just saw her live for the first time a few years ago opening for The Who.

      1. I like Joan Jett like you like The Who. I’ve seen her a few times. Always a good show. I’ve never had the privilege of seeing The Who. Of course, I would have wanted to see them with Keith Moon, and his era was before my concert going time, but I would have settled seeing them without him. I love all the members.

      2. Same here with Keith Moon.
Zak Starkey is drumming and it’s odd that Keith showed Ringo’s son how to play drums and he ended up taking his place.
Joan Jett is great. I have a lot of respect for her. She made it because she worked for it by starting her own record company. She was great by the way.

  2. excellent song! I actually bought the Joan Jett single back in the 80s but I like the original better. By the wayI digress but my sweetie and I are moving , so my visits to internet are a bit infrequent last day or two. I sure hope everything is settled in and back to normal by Monday or Tuesday!

      1. thanks! Almost done, but it’s been hellish. Kind of a drag it fell mostly on this day , being last day of regular MLB sched but oh well…although looks like you LA fans get a bonus game 163!

      2. Glad it’s almost done…I hate moving…
LA went 1-5 against the Reds! Just one of those games means no ties…but it doesn’t work that way… It should be a great baseball day tomorrow.

      3. Well good luck to your Dodgers…I have no particular allegiance to them or the Rockies, so I’ll be happy to see your guys win. Some teams are just bugaboos though- for Toronto, it seems like that’s Tampa.Granted, Rays were quite good this season but even when they’re dead last toronto seems unable to buy a win in Florida

      4. Well I appreciate it. The thing about the Dodgers is their bullpen. That is what I’m scared of…other than that they are loaded.

Matchups… I think some teams just match up better…no matter the talent level…
